Warner Bros.The Harry Potter author, J.K. Rowling, has revealed a dark theory involving Professor Dumbledore as her ‘favourite’ because it fitted in the franchise’s storyline.
Despite it being nearly 17 years from when the first film was released – yes I can’t believe it’s been that long either – people just can’t get enough of the young wizard and his friends.
Fans and theorists are still whiling the hours, trying to decipher all the hidden symbolism and meanings.
In recent years, a group of Harry Potter fans have concocted a quite clever, yet haunting, theory about Mr Albus Dumbledore, headmaster of Hogwarts. It’s one which J.K. herself approves of.
In both the film and the book, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, a tale is told, by the name of ‘Tale of Three Brothers’.
In the tale, the three wizarding brothers encounter a river far which is too dangerous for them to cross. Yet, using their wands, they’re able to muster a bridge – this then prompts the hooded figure of Death to appear.
Death is angry over the fact that the brothers have ‘cheated’ him.
However, Death, then pretends to be impressed by the actions of the brothers offers them each a prize of their choice.
The first brother asks for a wand ‘more powerful than any other’, and he is presented with Elder Wand. The second brother opts for a resurrection stone, so he could have the power of bringing people back to life.
Yet when it comes to the third brother, he’s already sussed out Death probably has an ulterior motive. With this trail of thought, he requests something to allow him to continue with his life without being followed by Death.
If you’ve not guessed it by now – or remember – Death then gives him an invisibility cloak, which is capable of hiding the wearer of said cloak from everyone – including Death himself.
Here’s the tale:
I know you’re probably thinking ‘where am I going with this’, but stay with me.
The first brother ends up being murdered over the Elder Wand and the second takes his own life after a woman he resurrects returns differently.
However, the third brother manages to live a long life, before handing the invisibility cloak to his son, before greeting ‘Death as an old friend’.
For some time now, there’s been a fan theory which suggests, in the tale, Lord Voldemort represents the first brother – who asked for a wand that’s more powerful than any other – typical Voldemort.
It continues with the second brother, with the same fans believing it’s representative of Severus Snape – because love is his downfall. As you may (or may not) remember, he had a love for Lily Potter.
The last brother is believed to be Harry Potter though, because he’s described as a ‘humble man who simply wants to live a long happy life, free from the fear of Death’.
If you believe the three representations, then you’ll probably agree with the thought there’s only one person who can technically be ‘Death’ – Professor Dumbledore.
After thinking about it for a little while, it kind of makes sense. In the first book Harry Potter & The Philosopher’s Stone, Dumbledore gives Harry an invisibility cloak, which is said to have been passed down by his father, James Potter.
Included with the cloak is a note that reads:
Your father left this in my possession when he died. It is time it was returned to you. Use it well.
WikimediaAs well as that, in the Deathly Hallows film, Harry is shot at with the killing curse before entering King’s Cross Station and greets Dumbledore (or Death if you believe it) as an ‘old friend’.
Sounds like a brilliant and well thought-out theory in all honesty.
