Calling all Gavin and Stacey fans: if you’ve been missing your regular dose of Uncle Bryn and need a bit of good news to brighten your Tuesday morning, keep reading.
Despite the final episode of the hit sitcom airing more than nine years ago (God I feel old), the show is set to make a comeback just in time for Christmas. You can thank me later.
That’s right folks, James Corden has just announced on social media that the show will be back in the form of a Christmas special episode – and I can’t wait.
Addressing his 10.5 million followers on Twitter, the actor-turned-TV presenter admitted he and Ruth Jones had been ‘keeping this secret for a while’ and were ‘excited to share this with you’.
Posting earlier this morning (May 28), Corden shared a picture of the script titled: ‘Christmas Special 2019’ alongside the words, ‘see you on Christmas Day’. Eeeeek.
Obviously, fans were excited and the tweet quickly amassed thousands of likes in a matter of minutes, with many sharing GIFs from the show to show exactly how much this news meant to them.
Who can blame them? The much-loved British sitcom, starring Mathew Horne, Joanna Page, James Corden, and Ruth Jones (to name a few), was a breakthrough hit for BBC Three, with their third series moving to premiere on BBC One.
The show followed Gavin (Horne), a boy from Essex, and Stacey (Page), a girl from Barry, who spoke on the phone to each other every day at work before they finally meet.
From there, the series follows the couple as they fall in love and get married, while exploring their relationship with their family and friends too. And what a family dynamic that was!
As per the BBC, Corden and Jones said in a statement:
Over the last ten years we’ve talked a lot about Gavin and Stacey – where they might be today and what their lives might look like. And so in secret we took the plunge and wrote this one hour special.
We’ve loved revisiting Barry and Essex again and bringing the characters back together has been a joy. We’re so excited to get the chance to work with our fabulous cast and crew once more and to give fans of the show a festive treat this Christmas. Thank you BBC for helping to make this happen.
Further details are expected to be announced in due course, but for now we’ll just have to be content that Uncle Bryn and Nessa will soon be on our screens again (if only for a short period of time).
The Gavin and Stacey Christmas Special will air on Christmas Day.
