James Corden Says ‘Fear’ Drove Him To Write New Gavin And Stacey Episode

Last month James Corden delivered the news we’d all been waiting for when he revealed Gavin and Stacey would return for a Christmas special.

Quite unbelievably, it has been almost an entire decade since the last episode of the sitcom aired, and fans have been left wondering how Gavin’s job in Cardiff is going and how little Neil is getting on with Ness and Smithy’s co-parenting.

Ever since the last series aired, fans have pleaded with Corden and Ruth Jones to get their pen to paper for another hilarious season, but with Corden’s US career going from strength to strength, it seemed like another instalment was just a pipe dream for fans.

But now, Corden has revealed the real reason he and Ruth decided to give in to fans demands, insisting ‘fear’ was the reason for bringing back the iconic comedy.

During an interview with The Times, The Late Late Show host said they ‘owed it to the characters’ to revisit their lives, and we honestly couldn’t agree more.

He told the publication:

Let’s see what they’re doing. We wanted to see if there was something there, and for a while we weren’t sure. Then, once there was, my feeling was, life’s too short. Fear is the absolute reason to do it.

This sounds ridiculously deep, but none of us are promised tomorrow. We’re here for a minute, so you have to try to do it all. I’d rather regret something than not do it.

Whatever the reason for the reboot, we’re well overdue a dose of Gwen’s omelettes, Smithy’s robot dancing, and Stacey’s daft questions, but will we ever find out what’s occurring with the infamous fishing trip between Uncle Bryn and Jason? Sadly not.

‘I’m never going to tell you,’ Corden answered when probed into what went down between the uncle and nephew duo.

As for the plot, the talk show host did reveal Brexit wouldn’t be at the top of the discussion list at the dinner table, insisting ‘we did talk about it, but we just want the new show to be a nostalgic joy-bomb’.

However, he did go as far as to say Nessa and Gavin would have voted to remain, while impulsive Smithy and Stacey would have voted to leave.

It has long been reported a fall out between Corden and Matthew Horne (Gavin) was the reason a Gavin and Stacey special hadn’t come earlier, but James has denied that insisting their relationship had ‘always been great.’ Even if they did fall out, it would only take a cheeky pinky promise and a robot dance to get back on track.

The Gavin and Stacey Christmas special will air on BBC One on Christmas Day this year.
