Apparently Jason Momoa is keen to shake the water out of his hair and swap his trident for some claws as the actor has said he’d love to play Wolverine.

I think it would be quite a natural transition, really. His luscious hair makes him look quite wolf-like, so it would be easy to believe he possesses the character’s animal-keen senses.

The 39-year-old became the King of Atlantis in Aquaman last year, and with the sequel not set for release until 2022 the actor still has some time left in the role.

However, he’s clearly not put all of his eggs in the DC basket as Momoa is open – or rather, very enthusiastic – about the idea of becoming part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The Game of Thrones star appeared at Celebrity Fan Fest in San Antonio recently, where he was asked which MCU character he’d like to play.

He’d obviously given the question some thought in the past, as Momoa immediately responded:

Wolverine. Oh I’d love to play Wolverine.

The Greatest Showman star Hugh Jackman has been the face of Wolverine since the original X-Men movie in 2000, but after 17 years and eight films his time as the mutant came to an end two years ago, with Logan.

Jackman spoke about moving on from the role last year, when he told MTV News:

It’s a bit like you’re at the greatest party you’ve ever been at, you’ve been dancing for an hour and a half, and then you’re just like ‘It’s time, ok. If I stay any longer, it’s gonna get ugly.’ It’s like, it’s time.

Following the Fox-Disney merger earlier this year, the X-Men franchise is now under Disney rule as part of Marvel Studios. Now Jackman has stepped back from the role, X-Men producer Lauren Shuler Donner acknowledged it might be time for the character to be played by a younger actor.

According to Slash Film, she said:

[Jackman] worked so hard to bulk up, would get up at four in the morning to bulk and eat protein meals every two hours because his natural state, they used to call him Worm when he was a kid.

So his natural state is a very skinny guy. Once you reach a certain age, the body just won’t go anymore. I think he was wise to say, ‘I’m at that point. I can’t do it.’

Momoa praised Jackman for his portrayal of the character, adding:

He was phenomenal. I grew up just loving Wolverine.

Obviously Momoa is tied in to the role of Aquaman for the next few years, but if the Marvel role is still open when his time underwater comes to an end I’m sure he’ll be first in line to audition!

Do you think Momoa would make a good Wolverine?
