Our whole universe was in a hot, dense state, then nearly fourteen billion years ago expansion started, wait. The earth began to cool, the autotrophs began to drool, neanderthals developed tools, we built a wall (we built the pyramids!); maths, science, history, unraveling the mysteries that all started with the big bang! Hey!
Not my words, of course, but those of the Barenaked Ladies in the theme tune they wrote for The Big Bang Theory which after 11 years on TV has revealed it is to finish with Season 12 next year.
Warner Bros. Television announced yesterday (Wednesday August 22), the comedy’s 12th season will be its last.
The series finale will be out in May, and by the end of the latest series, The Big Bang Theory will have notched up a staggering 279 episodes.
In a joint statement, WBTV and Chuck Lorre Productions said, as reported by The Hollywoood Reporter:
We are forever grateful to our fans for their support of The Big Bang Theory during the past twelve seasons.
We, along with the cast, writers and crew, are extremely appreciative of the show’s success and aim to deliver a final season, and series finale, that will bring The Big Bang Theory to an epic creative close.
Kaley Cuoco, who plays Penny, said:
This ride has been a dream come true and as life changing as it gets. No matter when it was going to end , my heart would have always been broken in two. Drowning in tears, we promise to bring you the best season yet. To the fans, our crew, families, Chuck Lorre, Warner Brothers , CBS, and everyone who has supported us for so many years, thank you. We are going out with a bang.
According to word on the street, Jim Parsons was behind the longest-running multi-camera sitcom in history shutting up shop.
Entertainment Weekly reports that Parsons was more than ready to retire Dr. Sheldon cooper with next spring’s 12th season finale.
Had he agreed to stay on for two more years, which is what CBS was apparently trying to negotiate, he would’ve made a cool $50 million, as each cast member makes near to $1 million per episode.
The show, created by Chuck Lorre and Bill Prady, premiered in 2007.
Lorre revealed last year season 12 would possibly be the last. Season 11’s last episode featured a wedding between Sheldon (Jim Parsons) and Amy (Mayim Bialik), which many presumed would be the finale for the show as a whole.
During its run, The Big Bang Theory has been nominated for a whopping 52 Emmys, with 10 wins under its belt. However, it has never won the award for outstanding comedy series.
