John Cena Says He ‘Would Totally’ Take Over As Captain America

We’re allegedly just days away from the release of The Avengers 4 trailer and the question on everyone’s mind (or at least everyone who cares about Marvel) is ‘what’s going to happen to Earth’s mightiest heroes?’

Clued up fans are worried, as a number of the MCU’s big-name talent contracts are about to expire, the film will be a bloodbath, and kill off favourites like Thor, Captain America and Tony Stank.

As such, there’s been a lot of chatter online about who’ll inherit these newly vacant roles. Will Jane Foster find Mjolnir and become Thor? Could Riri Williams inherit the Iron Man armour? Who’ll inherit Cap’s shield – Bucky or Sam?

Or might a new contender claim the shield, a heavyweight contender (Disclaimer: I am reliably informed this is not a term in wrestling but I just watched Creed 2) like John Cena?

Ever since Chris Evans kind of, sort of, didn’t really, announce he was hanging up his shield, fans have wondered who’d replace him as the all-American hero.

And with his bulging muscles, winning smile, and humble persona, a lot of people were backing Cena as the new Steve Rogers, and it seems the Doctor of Thuganomics is up for it.

During a recent appearance on Ellen, when asked about the role, Cena said:

If it’s out there, if the Captain America people are listening and you’re watching right now, I’d totally do it.

I totally will, because I think I’d be a good Captain America…and I’ve already ruined everyone’s childhood, so it can’t get any worse!

Unfortunately for John though, it seems the rumours of Chris Evans’ departure were premature, even though he tweeted something which definitely sounded like he was retiring.

In a recent interview with the The Associated Press Joseph Russo who, with his brother Anthony, has worked with Chris Evans on both the Winter Soldier and Civil War films said: ‘he’s not done.’

He elaborated:

I think it was more emotional for him than us. Only because he’s not done yet. And I don’t want (to) explain what that means but the audience will soon understand what I’m talking about.

Chris himself also backtracked a little on the whole retiring thing explaining it’d been an emotional day, and regardless of how Avengers 4 ends, he’d have tweeted the exact same thing.

He added how he felt it was appropriate to share his gratitude with the fans for sticking with the MCU over 22 movies before finishing up by saying he was neither confirming or denying anything.

Of course, this doesn’t really confirm anything. Chris might be about to walk away from Cap and I guess we’ll just have to watch Avengers 4 to find out.

I won’t lie though, the idea of Chris leaving does sting a bit. After all, he said he was with us until the end of the line.

Captain America will return next year in Untitled Avengers Movie which hits cinemas on April 26.
