John Wick 3 Expected To Dethrone Avengers: Endgame At Box Office This Weekend

It seems impossible that anything could knock Avengers: Endgame off its box office throne.

The superhero mega-hit has so far claimed the top spot for three solid weeks, after smashing the all-time record for an opening night.

Within just five days of its release, Endgame pulled in $1.2 billion at the global box office, posing a mighty challenge this year’s summer blockbusters. But could it be that one newly released movie is about to steal its titan-sized crown?

John Wick: Chapter 3 — Parabellum has been projected to overtake Avengers: Endgame at the US box office this coming weekend, ending its box office reign.

As reported by Business Insider, John Wick is expected to rake in $40 million this weekend, with Endgame falling within the $30 million range.

BoxOffice Pro anticipate that John Wick will pull in $52 million, with Endgame making $36 million.

BoxOffice Pro’s chief analyst, Shawn Robbins, has stated:

Strong reviews for the Wick sequel are compounding interest levels among fans, as are the expanded cast (Halle Berry notably joins the franchise), the incoming goodwill of the previous two films, and the cliffhanger created by 2017’s previous entry in the series.

That first sequel earned a domestic lifetime gross more than three times its opening weekend figure, a rare performance by modern franchises.

Robbins added:

Pre-sale activity is very strong for Wick, while a significant PLF run this weekend and the lack of R-rated options appealing to older males in the market right now serve as further boosters to opening weekend expectations.

Meanwhile, Box Office Mojo has predicted that John Wick will take $48 million, with Endgame finally falling behind at $29 million.

Brad Brevet of Box Office Mojo reported:

On top of the strong reviews, online ticket retailer Fandango.com reports the film is outpacing presages for both of the previous Wick films combined.

Added to that, it will be opening in 737 more theaters than its predecessor and the May release date is much better positioning for a large opening than the February release for Wick 2. We’ll get a hint as to what we’re looking at on Friday morning following Thursday night’s previews.

Far more than a merely commercial success, it looks like this third installment will be deserving of a rewatch long after the initial hype has passed.

At the time of writing, John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum is enjoying an impressive 89 per cent critics’s score on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 157 reviews, and an audience score of 95 per cent based on 315 user ratings.

The critics consensus on Rotten Tomatoes is as follows:

John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum reloads for another hard-hitting round of the brilliantly choreographed, over-the-top action that fans of the franchise demand.

Will the world’s deadliest assassin prove tough enough to take down our favourite group of superheroes?

You can catch John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum in cinemas from May 17.
