John Wick: Chapter 3 might only just be in cinemas, but a release date is already here for John Wick 4.
Following on from the huge success of Chapter 3 – Parabellum, which knocked Avengers: Endgame off the top spot after three weeks, John Wick Chapter 4 has been confirmed after plenty of hints it would be coming did the rounds, and the release date has been revealed.
The first John Wick film was released in 2014 and grossed an impressive $90 million (£71 million), while 2017’s Chapter 2 hit a whopping $172 million (£135 million) lifetime.
Chapter 3 – Parabellum was only released last Friday and already made $57 million domestically and another $36 million overseas, hugely outselling the second instalment in the trilogy, Polygon reports.
News of the fourth movie was revealed in the form of a text message via the same service that released the first trailer for Chapter 3.
It read:
You have served. You will be of service. John Wick: Chapter 4 is coming – May 21, 2021.
The John Wick franchise began with Keanu Reeves – a retired but deadly hitman seeking vengeance and shooting up a load of bad guys, but it quickly turned into an entire universe with a cult following.
It’s widely presumed that Chad Stahelski will return to direct the fourth instalment, although there has been no confirmation he’s signed on for the movie as of yet.
However, he previously hinted to Inverse he’ll remain at the helm of the franchise, provided its success continues.
He told the publication:
We react to you. If you spend a billion dollars on Avengers and do $300 million in pre-sales, they’re going to keep making Avengers. If you boycott a shitty movie, they’ll stop making them.
We were one of those odd little properties that got really fucking lucky in today’s market of superhero big budget stuff. To come from a tiny, $18 million dollar, kill-20-people over a puppy to where we are now, we’re very thankful.
I reckon it’s fair to say the success seems set to continue for a little while yet if Chapter 3 is anything to go by.
The action thriller movies are written and created by Derek Kolstad, directed by Stahelski and distributed by Summit.
John Wick: Chapter 4 is set to hit cinemas May 21, 2021.
