Hold onto your webs, because I have some news which’ll make you dance with every one of your eight legs.

There were whispers of Jake Gyllenhaal joining the cast of Spider-Man: Far From Home a sequel to Spider-Man: Homecoming as bubble headed villain Mysterio.

Seeing as how he bears more than a striking resemblance to OG Spider-Man, Tobey Maguire (can’t you see it?) this always felt so right to me. Plus, Gyllenhaal is undoubtedly a brilliant actor and would be an inspired addition to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

And now we finally appear to have confirmation of this excellent decision, with photos leaked showing Gyllenhaal on the Spider-Man: Far From Home set, clad in (almost) full Mysterio get-up.

The scenes in question were taken in Liberec, Czech Republic, which is one of the filming destinations for the still deeply mysterious Spider-Man: Far From Home.

Comic book fans will notice he’s missing his iconic fishbowl helmet, however the distinctive purple colour of his suit indicates this is indeed the deceptively cunning super villain they love to hate.

Mysterio, aka Quentin Beck, made his comic book debut way back in 1964 and has a suitably interesting back story. The Stan Lee and Steve Ditko creation was once a special effects expert and stuntman for a major Hollywood studio, before deciding to use his talents for illusion for evil.

Although he doesn’t possess any magical powers himself, he’s able to fake supernatural abilities using his cinematic skillset; much like a dark and devious Wizard of Oz.

Those who’ve seen the images have found their spidey senses to be well and truly tingling; scouring the stills to try and figure out what sort of villain Peter Parker is up against.

One person approved:

I’m surprised they are going comic book accurate.

YES, look just how I wanted it, just leaves the question of the helmet, do they go full fishbowl??? [sic]

This will be Mysterio’s cinematic debut, meaning the pressure will be well and truly on for Gyllenhaal to bring the iconic comic book character to life.

Spider-Man: Far From Home will swing into US cinemas as of July 5, 2019. A UK release date has not yet been given.
