New Line CinemaFilming for Amazon’s upcoming Lord Of The Rings television show is expected to start in Scotland this summer.
The series was first announced in 2017, and fans have been eagerly awaiting updates ever since.
Cameras are now expected to start rolling this August, with the predicted release date for the show being 2021.
New Line CinemaAn industry source told The Daily Record the £1 billion series will be filmed at a huge new studio in Leith, Edinburgh which is yet to open.
Arts body Creative Scotland are hoping it’ll be ready on time, as they’re now looking to appoint an operator to lease, refurbish and run the facility.
Filming for the show based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s popular books is due to last three months, making Amazon Studios the studio’s first major client.
The source said:
Lord of the Rings producers are hoping to start filming at the new studio from about August to November.
A lot of arrangements are already in place. All that remains now is for it to be up and running in time – so the clock is ticking.
It’s anticipated production will return for another three months from next March. There could be more after that. It’s a massive contract and a gigantic boost for the studio and for Scotland.
The building, which lies three miles from Edinburgh city centre, was originally built in 2000 for an engineering firm, but closed four years later.
A wave power firm then took the building over, however the company collapsed in 2014.
Last year for the filming of Avengers: Infinity War the facility was temporarily turned into a film studio, giving the area a boost.
Although not much is known about the upcoming television series, fans have been guessing as to what the plot will centre on.
Several posts shared on Amazon’s official Twitter account for the show have been teasing us, suggesting it’ll be set in Númenor, which was all but destroyed thousands of years before the events of Lord of the Rings.
The location could be spotted on a map Amazon tweeted with the caption:

Following the tweet, Amazon then shared an update with the caption ‘Welcome to the Second Age’, a period of time set thousands of years before even The Hobbit.
It’s all indicating the show will be a prequel, perhaps focusing on the downfall of Númenor which Sauron was responsible for.
