GettyLouis Theroux will be returning to BBC with three new documentaries – and no, they won’t be about Donald Trump.
The famed journalist will be taking on murder, sex trafficking and drugs in an in-depth look at the ‘uniquely devastating challenges’ America currently faces.
In an exclusive interview with The Independent, Theroux said:
I immerse myself in some of the most dysfunctional and disturbing aspects of American society. They combine hard-hitting actuality with intimate interviews.
I have been granted access to the police in several states; I’ve got to know the people affected by crime; and I’ve also spent time with the perpetrators of crime, with the idea of understanding the causes of it, both on a systemic level and also in a very personal way.
PAHis documentary Sex Trafficking Houston – currently a working title – will take a look at what is regarded as the number one spot for human trafficking in America.
In Murder in Milwaukee, Theroux spends time in one of the country’s most impoverished cities. The film follows the aftermath of two police shootings at time of heightened tensions between the African-American community and police.
Theroux’s third documentary, Opiate City travels to Huntington, West Virginia where one in 10 babies are reportedly born addicted to opiates. The film follows the world of prescription painkillers and how America’s clampdown on oversubscription has led to a rise in opiate dependencies.
