The producers of Star Wars: The Last Jedi have made a point about revealing very little about the franchise’s next film. But this week, they made an exception.

The first footage from The Last Jedi has been shown to Disney shareholders at the company’s annual meeting in Denver, Colorado.

The Los Angeles Times reports that the footage featured what happens next after Rey finds Luke Skywalker at his secluded cliffside hideout.

The cliffhanger, which appeared at the end of the film’s direct predecessor The Force Awakens, showed Rey holding her lightsaber out towards Luke.

In the brief sneak peak of The Last Jedi shown by Disney this week, Luke asks Rey: “Who are you?” Rey responds by handing the lightsaber back to its rightful owner.

Other characters who appear in the footage include Chewbacca, Finn and the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa.

Bob Iger, Walt Disney Co.’s chairman and chief executive, took a moment before the screening to pay tribute to Fisher.

“Carrie Fisher has been an iconic part in this franchise from the very beginning,” he said. “We all miss her. She has great talent and wit. We’re proud that this movie coming up is part of her legacy.”

He also described The Last Jedi as ‘a perfect chapter in the iconic Skywalker family drama’, so watch out all you ‘Who’s Rey’s father?’ conspiracy theorists.

Star Wars: The Last Jedi will hit UK theatres on 15 December.
