To lure in the Night King, Bran Stark waited as bait in the godswood in the centre of Winterfell, and when the ice zombie was distracted about to execute his target, Arya used all her stealth training to sneak up on the Night King. Though he caught her mid-air, she stabbed him in the stomach, finally causing his demise. Valar Mourghulis.

While the scene was certainly epic, Maisie admitted the storyline took her by surprise. According to Entertainment Weekly, the actor decided not to read the full script ahead of the table read, when it was performed live by her castmates around a conference room table in Belfast.

When Arya’s big moment was revealed, the cast reportedly cheered, and though Maisie was excited, she did also have her doubts.

She explained:

It was so unbelievably exciting. But I immediately thought that everybody would hate it; that Arya doesn’t deserve it.

The hardest thing is in any series is when you build up a villain that’s so impossible to defeat and then you defeat them.

It has to be intelligently done because otherwise people are like, ‘Well, [the villain] couldn’t have been that bad when some 100-pound girl comes in and stabs him.’

Maisie decided to tell her boyfriend about her character’s surprising accomplishment, but rather than cheer like the GoT cast, he had a very different reaction.

He responded:

Mmm, should be Jon though really, shouldn’t it?

It’s probably not the unwavering support Maisie was looking for, but to be fair, the star’s boyfriend wasn’t the only one who thought Jon Snow might be a more fitting character to defeat the Night King.

In fact Kit Harington, aka Jon Snow himself, thought he’d be the one to end the battle.

The actor told Entertainment Weekly:

I was surprised, I thought it was gonna be me!

But I like it. It gives Arya’s training a purpose to have an end goal. It’s much better how she does it the way she does it.

Hopefully Maisie’s boyfriend came around to the idea of Arya’s big moment once he saw the scene unfold!
