Making A Murderer was so successful in captivating audiences that many dedicated fans didn’t just follow the case, they started reviewing evidence themselves.
As reported by UPROXX, one group of fans on Reddit believe they have poked a massive hole in the prosecutions case against Avery.
As part of their case against Avery and Brendan Dassey, they accused the pair of murdering Teresa Halbach and burning her body in a fire pit – a pit which was allegedly so hot it left nothing but fragments of Halbach’s bone and some DNA.
Property tag 7955 – which is ‘human’ remains according to the prosecution – has become the focus online for fans who believe it is actually the carpometacarpus of a bird.
If proven this would back up the argument that Steven was using the bonfire to burn animal remains, and suggests the ‘evidence’ against him needs a through review to confirm the remains were Halbach’s and not an assortment of animal bones.
Furthermore – how could the small bones of animals survive the same blazing fire that all but destroyed a human corpse?
In identifying Halbach’s DNA, forensic labs were meant to spot 16 points of DNA in order to be usable in court, but the analysis of mitochondrial DNA only returned seven.
Not a problem in the prosecution’s eyes, as they asserted there was a ‘one in a billion’ chance the DNA belonged to anyone other than Halbach.
The problem is that other researchers have found in a database of 65,000 people, one piece of mitochondrial DNA matched to 122 people at only nine points.
Could this be enough to throw the case wide open again? Well Avery’s lawyer Kathleen Zellner is set to present an appeal on behalf of her client at the end of this month, so we will have to wait patiently to see what she builds his case around.
