In this modern world, social media is both a blessing and a curse. Yes, it can be great to pass the time by scrolling through funny memes, but those memes could contain spoilers, and once you’ve seen them, you can’t un-see them.
The pressure of trying to avoid plot points has only got more intense in recent years, as franchises such as the Infinity Saga and Game of Thrones reach their epic conclusions, so it’s best just to stay off social media altogether if you want to experience the revelations for yourself.
Walt Disney Studios Motion PicturesAfter successfully avoiding Infinity War spoilers following the film’s initial release, the Marvel fan was horrified to find a troll had filled his Instagram comments with every detail of the Avengers’ race to stop Thanos.
Obviously, he was annoyed, but while most people would probably throw a quick insult to the troll and move on, the scorned man decided to come up with a cunning revenge plan.
He shared his story on Reddit, where he explained how Infinity War had been ruined for him:
So about a year ago, I made a post on Instagram about how excited I was to see Infinity War, and I foolishly used the hashtag “Thanosdemandsyoursilence”
As you may know, you can look up hashtags on Instagram and browse through posts using that hashtag. After I made the post, a random guy (who I assume was browsing the hashtag to find people who used it) randomly targeted me, and commented on my post a full list of everyone who died.
I hadn’t seen the movie by then, and I did get it spoiled.
The Reddit user went on to explain that at this point, Avengers: Endgame had been confirmed – though there were still months to go until its release.
But that didn’t matter to this guy; he decided the wait would be worth it.
He messaged the troll and pretended they were too late; that he’d already been to see Infinity War, but that trying to spoil it for him had been a good prank. The Marvel fan then pretended to befriend the troll, and for seven months basically spent most of his spare time ensuring the foundations for his revenge plot were solidified.

So for about 7 months, me and him messaged eachother, texted memes, talked about movies, and stuff like that. (Keep in mind the friendship was fake, I was just trying to get his trust and make him comfortable with me).
Finally, on April 25, 2019, Avengers: Endgame hit cinemas, and his long, drawn out plan could finally come into fruition. The Marvel fan bought tickets for the film’s midnight screening, and after making sure he was seeing it before his enemy, he set about snapping pictures of every major plot point in the film.
I have to admit, the plan seems like a huge waste of time. Although it might have been satisfying to get his own back on the troll, surely his own Endgame experience would have been ruined by the fact he had to keep his camera ready at all times to capture the spoilers?
The angry man was clearly committed to seeing his plan through to the end, and after he emerged from the cinema, he put the final phase into motion:
When I got out, I almost thought of not doing it. I don’t like to spoil movies, I think it’s lame, but I reassured myself that this guy deserves it.
So I texted him that I saw it, he asked how it was and I told him it was great, he told me not to spoil it, and I said “Oh, like how you spoiled Infinity War.”
Then he switched moods, he was all like “Hey man, that was a long time ago, we’re friends now,” Stuff like that. Then, in one glorious action, I sent all the pictures as fast as I could, messaging plot points along with the pictures.
It was all over in like 30 seconds, but he definitely saw it all. He cursed me out, saying I was a horrible person and stuff.
I have to say, for someone who seems to be such a big Marvel fan, you’d think they’d listen to the Russo brothers and the cast when they requested people not to spoil the Endgame.
Plus, by spoiling the film himself, the Reddit user is really no different to the troll – even if the troll was kind of asking for it.
Not only did the Marvel fan successfully ruin the film for the troll, but they also tore apart the idea of their friendship.
The post continued:
Then he said “Why would you do that, we’re such good friends?”
And I texted back, “we’re not friends, a year ago you picked me out of a crowd of thousands and ruined a movie that I had been wanting to see for months, since then I’ve been lying to you, deceiving you and gaining your trust all for this moment. You are not my friend, just a person who got what they deserve.”
Then, he cursed me out some more, and I haven’t talked to him since.
I think it’s safe to say the underhand plot was successful, even if it was pretty excessive. I’m sure the troll will have learnt his lesson when it comes to spoiling films in the future!
