As we all mourn the end of The Avengers as we know them, we can take comfort in the fact that Marvel were never going to let things slide too long.
The studios are well aware we’ll be hungry for more top-notch entertainment soon, probably in just a few weeks after Game of Thrones has finished, so they’re keeping fans baited by dropping little nuggets of things we can look forward to in the future.
First up, for the small screen, is a new live-action version of Ghost Rider, the ‘quintessential antihero’ who is ‘consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon’.
Though we’ve seen the inimitable Nicolas Cage take on the Johnny Blaze character in the past, the new series is set to focus on Robbie Reyes – a newer, younger Ghost Rider. Soz Nic.
Marvel’s Ghost-Rider, as well as a new Marvel’s Helstrom, are making their way to Hulu in 2020, as Marvel Television and the streaming service look to expand their partnership.
Marvel describe the series as:
‘Marvel’s Ghost Rider’ centers on Robbie Reyes, the quintessential antihero, who lives on the Texas/Mexico border, consumed by hellfire and supernaturally bound to a demon. When he unleashes the Rider, Robbie brings vengeance for the innocents he encounters, but struggles controlling the power he wields.
The show will be executive produced by Ingrid Escajeda (Justified, Sneaky Pete), who will also act as showrunner.
Ingrid said:
I couldn’t be more excited and honored to be handed the reins to a Marvel character as beloved as GHOST RIDER. This story hits every note for me — my love for grounded yet conflicted characters and my desire to scare the $&!# out of people!
It’s important to me to find a take that thrills existing fans as well as wider audiences and I believe we’ve done just that.
The character of Robbie Reyes was introduced to the comicbook series in 2013. Rather than the iconic motorcycle most people associate Ghost Rider with, he drives a 1969 Dodge Charger, though it’s not yet been revealed what he’ll be driving in the new series.
Gabriel Luna is set to play the titular character. Luna has played Ghost Rider before, appearing in the ABC-Marvel TV series Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. However, according to Variety, the upcoming iteration of the character will be completely new, and will in no way be connected to the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. storyline.
