ICYMI, the Walt Disney Company is starting a streaming service called Disney+.
And today it has been announced there is to be a special live-action television series based around Loki, played by Tom Hiddleston.
Heads up, spoilers rife from here on out. Not rife, actually. I’m just a fan of hyperbole.
So yeah, anyone who last saw Loki in Infinity War probably noticed he got strangled the f*** out by Thanos.
It was never confirmed whether he perished or not, but that doesn’t really matter. Disney CEO Bob Iger has confirmed the character is destined for his own series, Screen Rant reports.
Infinity War opened with an estimated $630 million worldwide, smashing previous-holder The Fate of the Furious with $542 million. It’s since overtook the record set by The Force Awakens, which garnered $248 million.
As for the rumour mill regarding Loki’s demise, Hiddleston said recently, as per ComicBook:
Listen… I’ve heard some amazing theories about this. I was in a park in London a couple of weeks ago, and some guys came and said hi, and they asked me the same question. They said, ‘Hey, listen, we need an answer to this question. All the other times Loki’s died’ — there’s been a few — ‘he stabs with his right hand. And now he’s stabbing with his left hand.’ I was like, ‘That’s incredible attention to detail.’
He said previously:
I also don’t think he’s truly evil. He never was, even in the Norse mythology, in the pantheon. Loki’s a very important, fascinating character, the trickster. He’s somebody that the gods needed at particular times. Lots of people are familiar with the Norse stories, but he’s someone who — he represents chaos in opposition to order, and sometimes what you need is a bit of chaos, and Asgard wouldn’t be the same without him.
Not much is known about 2019’s Avengers 4 considering the huge hype around box office smash Infinity War, but the people want it. The numbers show.
During an earnings call, Iger revealed a cheeky little bit of info regarding the future of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
He said:
We meet on a regular basis with our Marvel team, and we’ve plotted out Marvel movies that will take us well into the next decade.
I’m guessing we will try our hand at what I’ll call a new franchise beyond Avengers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you won’t see more Avengers down the road. We just haven’t made any announcements about that.
Given the popularity of the characters and given the popularity of the franchise, I don’t think people should conclude there will never be another Avengers movie.
