The Showtime series’ titular star, Michael C. Hall, has an optimistic view of his former character, and despite having moved on to pastures new, is adopting a ‘never say never’ attitude.
Dexter followed the trials and tribulations of a Miami police blood splatter expert who moonlights as a serial killer, though following a code to ensure he’s only killing serious criminals.
ShowtimeThe Golden Globe-winning actor said to Variety:
When Dexter ended, I wanted to mix it up and felt like the cumulative effect of the things I have done since has served as a sort of ‘Dexorcism.’
[But] it’s a possibility given how the show ended that we could revisit Dexter. I have just yet to, for my part, imagine or hear someone else’s idea that makes it feel worth doing. But never say never.
Speaking about what life was like right after the end of Dexter, he told The Hollywood Reporter:
There’s no individual role that is going to undo the Dexter-ization of your image, but it’s nice just to continue to move forward and start to mix it up. The biggest thing is not being bound by the schedule of having to return again and again to the same TV show.
How conscious of it am I? I was conscious of it when I looked at the Cold in July script and saw that my character killed someone in the first few pages. The context, though, in which that happens is so fundamentally different, both in terms of the character himself and the world he’s living in. Frankly, it was therapeutic to do this on the heels of Dexter and to play someone who has a greater sense of human remorse.
That’s actually how I felt after Dexter ended. I realized there was a part of myself that I probably had short-circuited so I could play someone who was able to kill someone and go have a sandwich. One of the first spontaneous thoughts I had when it was all over was, ‘What have I done?’

It emerged recently Dexter Morgan actually had non-fictional roots in a Brazilian serial killer, called Rodrigues Filho, or Pedrinho Matador (Killer Petey).
From the 1960s to 2003, Pedro claimed at least 71 lives, both in and outside jail. Born with a damaged skull thanks to the extent of violence inflicted upon his mother by his father during her pregnancy, Pedro was 13 when he first realised his taste and propensity for aggression.
Following an incident aged 14 when an argument led to him trying to throw his cousin into a sugar cane press, Pedro murdered the Vice Mayor of Alfenas, who’d fired his father prior to his killing.
Shortly after that incident, he wiped out a school guard who thought he was a thief, before killing another guard.
At age 20 he was arrested and placed in a police car with two criminals, one of whom was a convicted rapist. By the time they reached the station, Pedro had killed him.
Pedro went on to kill 47 of his fellow inmates who, he believed, deserved retribution for their crimes. According to Pedro, the thrill of killing another criminal was ‘wonderful and satisfying’, his favourite method – like Dexter – was stabbing and hacking them with blades.
Pedro was handed a sentence of 128 years for the murder of at least 71 people, of which he only served 30 – according to Brazilian law, this is the maximum sentence a prisoner can serve.
In 2007 he was released back into society, where he’s since vowed to kill other criminals if the opportunity arises.
