Mike Myers said he’s ‘doing his best’ to get a fourth Austin Powers movie in the works.
The spy action comedy films already include Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery (1997), Austin Powers: The Spy Who Sh*gged Me (1999) and Austin Powers in Goldmember (2002).
Now, Myers, who plays numerous characters in the films; Austin Powers, Doctor Evil, Fat B*stard and Goldmember, revealed there’s actually somebody close to home bugging him to do a fourth film.
The actor told PEOPLE it’s his son, Spike, who keeps asking him when he’s going to bring out another Austin Powers movie.
Myers said:
[Spike] keeps asking me, ‘Where’s the fourth Austin Powers?’ which is the weirdest thing. I’m like, ‘Get off my back. I’m doing my best’.
He continued:
And I said, ‘I’d like to. I don’t know.’ Then he said, ‘What’s Dr. Evil’s lair?’ And I said, ‘an oil rig,’ and he said, ‘what’s an oil rig?’ I said, ‘it’s where you drill oil at sea.’ He goes, ‘it should be a sewer,’ and fell asleep.
Myers has been asked numerous times in interviews over the years about a fourth instalment.
Three years after the third film, in October 2005, he said there was ‘hope’ and how he ‘missed doing the characters’.
In May 2007, he told MovieHole:
There’s a fully conceived idea for a fourth and I can just say that it’s from Dr. Evil’s point of view. So if you balanced how much of it was Austin with Dr. Evil, it’s more about Dr. Evil than Austin.
In 2016, director Jay Roach told Larry King a fourth film had been discussed, saying:
You know, Mike Myers and I talk about it every time we get together. I would say it’s in a latent phase right now, but someday if we find the right idea that seems to have it earn itself, for sure.
Mike gave me the break of a lifetime in letting me direct [Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery] so I’m always good to go.
Myers made headlines earlier this year when it was revealed he’d been hosting a gameshow in disguise, for six months – and nobody noticed.
Disguised as a gameshow host by the name of Tommy Maitland, viewers were told it was the 72-year-old British presenter of the rebooted American amateur talent show The Gong Show.
Maitland was introduced – in the trailer for the show – as a legendary host who’s making his debut in America – it enthralled viewers, being one of television’s greatest mysteries of the past few months.
Managing to keep up the deception until January, a statement released by ABC confirmed the gameshow was being renewed for a second season and how Maitland is in fact, Myers in disguise.
It read:
ABC has announced it won’t be gonging its popular summer series The Gong Show and has renewed it for a second season.
Celebrated film and television actor/comedian Mike Myers has finally confirmed the rumour that he is, indeed, the show’s host – British comedic legend Tommy Maitland.
‘Being the host of The Gong Show is a blast! Pure fun. It is with great delight that I can finally admit that there is indeed a Tommy Maitland, and that I portray him.
