This month is an unusually spooky one to say the least – not only have we got Halloween to look forward to, we also have to survive an upcoming Friday 13th.
Luckily, Netflix have just the thing to watch, whether your hiding from Michael Myers or Jason Voorhees – this new series is called Mindhunter and proves truth can be much scarier than fiction.
Iconic director and producer, David Fincher, is well known for telling psychologically compelling crime stories and Mindhunter looks to be as ambitious and complicated as anything he’s crafted for the silver screen.
Much like his 2007 murderous masterpiece Zodiac, this new drama is based on book material, drawing from John Douglas’ crime classic Mind Hunter: Inside the FBI’s Elite Serial Crime Unit.
The second trailer is so sinister it’ll give you some serious pre-Halloween goosebumps.

The plot follows two 1970s FBI agents Holden Ford, (Jonathan Groff), and Bill Tench, (Holt McCallany), as they grapple to understand the shadowy psyches of the vicious serial killers they work with.
In this new trailer, we see some intriguing dialogue between Ford and Tench (our new favourite detective duo?):
Certainly our goal is to be pre-emptive. We’re the FBI, Holden. That is not our goal… yet
Although it’s not yet clear which cop is the straight laced one and which one doesn’t play by the rules, it’s certain the relationship between the partners will be an interesting one.
The series examines the question ‘How do we get ahead of crazy if we don’t know how crazy thinks?’, while looking at the terror and discomfort of those who dare to look into the minds of evil.
Speaking with Collider, film genius Fincher has made the following statement:
I don’t want to talk about the gourmet, you know, opera expert, who – you know to me these are very sad people who have, you know, grown up under horrendous circumstances.
This is not – this is not to, you know, overstate how much empathy or sympathy we should have for them but it’s just simply a fact…
We’d seen so much, you know, of this sort of literary conceit of, there’s a very fine line separates the hunters from the hunted.
And I really thought it was time to sort of take that back and make it, really, the reason that we are fascinated with them is because we’re nothing like them. They are unfathomable.
Sounds like perfect viewing for anyone completely fascinated with criminal psychology. Basically, everyone!
The trailer opens with a blood curdling monologue from a sadistic murderer about the difficulties of ‘butchering’ people, signalling this will be a very intense exploration of the darker side of human nature.
Fincher has directed the pilot episode, with other directors for the series including Asif Kapadia, Tobias Lindholm and Andrew Douglas.
Will Mindhunter reach the dizzyingly popular heights of the Fincher produced House of Cards?
For now, we must just wait and see but with a second series already being announced, things are looking promising.
Mindhunter will of course be hitting Netflix Friday 13 October 2017, just in time for Halloween – what better way to forget all the unlucky things the day will surely bring?
