For anyone thinking Netflix was going to calm down anytime soon with its epic releases and unbeatable watches, think again.
We can’t even turn our laptops on these days without having a brand new release tempt us away from any form of responsibility whatsoever.
Enter: The Naked Director, a Japanese original TV series which Netflix is hoping will shine a light on the adult film industry.
Take a look at the trailer below:
The upcoming release from the streaming service centres around the controversial filmmaker Toru Muranishi, who revolutionised the porn industry during Japan’s economic boom of the 1980s.
As reported by GQ Australia, the series is based on Nobuhiro Motohashi’s book about Muranishi’s life and career, Zenra Kantoku.
If the trailer’s anything to go by, The Naked Director won’t be holding anything back. From champagne pyramids to exploding buses (and that’s not even getting started on all the nudity), the series looks set to explore all the controversy Muranishi was known for.
Muranishi, who will be played by Takayuki Yamada, was a seven-time convicted criminal and described himself as the ‘king of porn’.
In a previous interview with Variety, Yamada – who has starred in everything from arthouse dramas to the popular series Ushijima the Loan Shark – spoke about his new role.
The actor said:
For years people have been asking me if I’d like to direct, but my reply was always ‘only if I find the right project’. Now, I’ve found a nicer answer: ‘Yamada will be a porn director’
According to the full Netflix synopsis, the series will consist of 10 parts, leaving no stone unturned.
The summary reads, as per GQ Australia:
The 10 episode series will chronicle his rise to fame, filled with big ambitions as well as spectacular setbacks in his unflinching attempt to turn Japan’s porn industry on its head.
It will also be a portrait of an ensemble of characters who experience success and failure in Japan’s ‘bubble’ era of the 1980s, a time that gave rise to unprecedented splendour and access.
With only a couple of months until its release, Netflix will be hoping to have yet another record breaking programme on their hands.
The Naked Director is expected to land on Netflix on August 8.
