Ideas are currently being explored for a potential House of Cards spin-off.

Netflix and Media Rights Capital are now reported to be in the early development stages for various spin-off ideas.

This information comes after Netflix announced they will pull the plug on the popular political thriller series after the upcoming sixth season.

This announcement comes in the wake of allegations against Kevin Spacey, who plays Machiavellian politician Frank Underwood in the show.

According to Variety, one potential spin-off idea could follow the story of creepy, calculating political aide-de-camp Doug Stamper (Michael Kelly).

Eric Roth – who served as an executive producer during the first four seasons – is expected to pen this particular concept should it get the green light.

Two more concepts are currently being discussed, however details have not been given and writers have yet to be specified.

The successful spin-off idea will take place within the cold, cruel House of Cards universe, which has been hugely influential in establishing Netflix as a purveyor of high quality, critically acclaimed drama.

In this regard, Netflix is following HBO’s lead with Game of Thrones, where other stories from George RR Martin’s magical world will be told, long after Jon Snow and Daenerys’s final battle.

Netflix gave confirmation on Monday about season six being the final instalment of the Primetime Emmy award winning show.

It has also been advised Spacey is not currently on the House of Cards set, which is being produced in Baltimore.

Netflix and Media Rights Capital gave the following joint statement on the matter:

Media Rights Capital and Netflix are deeply troubled by last night’s news concerning Kevin Spacey.

In response to last night’s revelations, executives from both of our companies arrived in Baltimore this afternoon to meet with our cast and crew to ensure that they continue to feel safe and supported.

As previously scheduled, Kevin Spacey is not working on set at this time.

Actor Anthony Rapp has alleged Spacey made sexual advances on him back in 1986 when he was just 14-years-old. Spacey would have been 26 at the time.

Speaking to BuzzFeed News, Rapp spoke about how his ‘stomach churns’ looking at Spacey:

I still to this day can’t wrap my head around so many aspects of it.

It’s just deeply confusing to me.

Spacey later made an apology over Twitter, where he stated he did not remember the incident:

I have a lot of respect and admiration for Anthony Rapp as an actor. I’m beyond horrified to hear his story.

I honestly do not remember the encounter, it would have been over 30 years ago.

But if I did behave as he describes, I owe him the sincerest apology for what would have been deeply inappropriate drunken behavior, and I am sorry for the feelings he describes having carried with him all these years.

This story has encouraged me to address other things about my life. I know that there are stories out there about me and that some have been fuelled by the fact that I have been so protective of my privacy.

As those closest to me know, in my life I have had relationships with both men and women.

I have loved and had romantic encounters with men throughout my life, and I choose now to live as a gay man. I want to deal with this honestly and openly and that starts with examining my own behavior.

The final season of House of Cards is set to air on Netflix mid-2018.
