Since Making A Murderer hit Netflix in 2015, fans of the show have been gripped by Steven Avery’s story.
Across the two seasons of the hit documentary, there’ve been plenty of twists and turns which have kept millions of viewers hooked as Avery works to prove his innocence.
It appears though, the biggest twist is yet to come, as his new attorney Kathleen Zellner, says she’ll file papers on December 20 which detail why Avery should win his case which will lead to his eventual release.
Speaking exclusively to OK magazine, Zellner said the papers she’ll be filing contain all the legal arguments as to why her client, Avery, should win his case.
Zellner added these papers are an astonishing 22,000 pages long, stating:
In one week, we’re filing the appellate brief, so we’re going to file all of this information with the higher court. We’ve got a record that’s 22,000 pages.
The higher court is going to review all of this new evidence. After we file, the state will file their response, and then the court will have an oral argument, and then they’ll make a decision. Whatever decision they make, it’s going to go to the Wisconsin Supreme Court. So even if we win, the state will still force it to be decided by the highest court in Wisconsin.
You must, if you can, create reasonable doubt by having an alternative theory that matches the evidence. That’s when you’re most likely to win a murder case.
My goal is to not just to find the constitutional violation to get Steven Avery a new trial, because many people are convicted again in their second trial. I am trying to get the evidence to what I believe is the truth of what happened, so that there won’t BE another trial.
Clearly optimistic, she also said she’s been given ‘a tip that was just jaw-dropping’ meaning they’re ‘getting close’ to convincing the judge how Avery should walk away free.
Later today (December 17), Zellner will make another announcement regarding Avery’s case, stating on Twitter it’ll be a critical update.
Yesterday she tweeted:
Tomorrow we will announce a new, important development in the Avery case about 2:30 pm CT. Stay tuned!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [sic]
That means here in the UK we should hear about the update at about 8.30pm tonight.
Zellner appears to be pretty confident she’s going to win this case for Avery, who’s currently serving a life sentence for the murder of Wisconsin photographer Teresa Halbach.
The 2007 conviction followed Avery filing a $36 million civil suit against Manitowoc County, its former sheriff, and its former district attorney for wrongful conviction and imprisonment.
New DNA evidence led to him being released 18 years into a 21-year-long sentence for sexual assault and attempted murder in 1985.
Avery hopes his legal team can once again prove he was wrongfully convicted for the murder of Halbach so he can walk free.
