Warning: Contains Spoilers
Though the Battle of Winterfell was certainly epic, the fight for the throne isn’t over yet – but it could be next week.
After the army of the living successfully (for the most part) made it through the Long Night, it’s time for the troops to head over to King’s Landing.
Compared to episode three, last night’s instalment wasn’t very dramatic, but Game of Thrones has a habit of making the penultimate episode the biggest of the season, so if they’ve stayed true to their usual formula we’re in for a big treat.
HBO released a teaser for the upcoming episode, showing Cersei looking smug as she gazed over her kingdom:
I’m sure she won’t be so smug once the last of the Stark and Targaryen armies descend!
We see Jon gathering the troops outside the city’s walls, and the teaser ends with a foreboding shot of Euron Greyjoy scanning the clouds for a dragon, before the rumblings of a roar sound.
With an 80-minute run time, the upcoming fifth episode promises to be action-packed as the determined characters fight for the coveted Iron Throne.
It was directed by Miguel Sapochnik, the man behind past epic Game of Thrones instalments such as The Winds of Winter, The Battle of the Bastards, and The Long Night, so we can be pretty confident there’s going to be some breathtaking, intense scenes ahead.
Although the Battle of Winterfell was dubbed the biggest TV battle in history, Daenerys Targaryen actor Emilia Clarke revealed that there is much more to come.
Speaking on Jimmy Kimmel Live, the Mother of Dragons described the final three episodes as ‘mental’, stating that ‘episode five is bigger’ than what has come before it.
She added:
Episode 5 is ‘Ahhhh.’ I mean 4 and 5 and 6, they’re all insane.
Most of the show’s key players managed to survive the Battle of Winterfell, but with another war brewing viewers might have to prepare themselves for some big losses during the fight for the throne.
According to Digital Spy, GoT stunt coordinator Rowley Irlam teased more deaths in a recent interview, saying:
It’s very poignant whenever we lose a character.
I can’t really tell you what’s going to come in the wars to come, but that’s not the last moment of that type, I have to assure you.
With just two more episodes to go, the show’s creators are sure to throw in some last-minute twists to leave viewers reeling!
Who do you think will win the Iron Throne?
