Warning: Contains Spoilers For Netflix Show You
After successfully creeping viewers out by showing the dark side of relationships in You, Netflix are back with a new movie full of secrets and lies perfect for fans of a chilling romance story.
Secret Obsession stars Brenda Song (The Suite Life of Zach and Cody) as Jennifer, alongside Mike Vogel (Bates Motel) as Russell, and tells the story of a young woman who wakes up after an accident with no recollection of what happened or who is the man at her hospital bedside.
Russell explains he’s Jennifer’s husband and takes her back to their beautiful home in the woods to what appears to be their perfect life.
However, things soon take a dark turn:
As it turns out, Russell isn’t Jennifer’s husband. Instead, he’s someone who had a – drum roll please – secret obsession with her and went to extreme and chilling lengths to be with her.
The Netflix original film draws similarities to the series You, in which student Beck swoons over the seemingly lovely Joe and the simple, happy life he offers her.
But, just like in Secret Obsession, the leading man is actually hiding dark secrets about how they came to be together.
In You, the viewer learns early on that Joe is a stalker. He monitors Beck’s phone and follows her movements, always lurking around in the background of her life and creating ways to run into her.
Secret Obsession bears resemblance to the series by way of a darkly obsessed man seemingly going to any length possible to get what he wants.
Not only do both Joe and Russell force their way into the women’s lives but they also ensure any competition is well and truly obliterated.
Book shop worker Joe goes to the extent of kidnapping and killing Beck’s former boyfriend and although the trailer for the new film doesn’t make clear exactly what happens to Jennifer’s real partner, the telling line ‘what did you do to my husband?’ suggests he’s not off on a lovely beach holiday somewhere.
The new thriller only just premiered on Netflix last night, July 18, but already its eliciting strong reactions from viewers, some saying they couldn’t sleep after it, and others being scared of all ‘the psychos out there’.
As one viewer wrote:
Secret Obsession on Netflix was SO good but now I am legitimately terrified and can’t sleep woo hoo!
While others were left with a more confused feeling:
The movie looks perfect for fans of You, and thankfully there’s not too long to wait until we find out what exactly did happen to Jennifer’s husband. We’ll just have to hope she doesn’t meet the same fate as Beck for asking too many questions…
Secret Obsession is available to stream on Netflix now.
