Richard Hammond has posted a video update from his hospital bed after his catastrophic car crash in Switzerland yesterday.

In a video posted by DriveTribe the 47-year-old petrol head apologised to his family for worrying them, thanked his colleague James May for sneaking in booze and joked that he was going to have a ‘Swiss Army knee’.

He said:

I’d like to thank all of the medical professionals who got me by air ambulance to the hospital and have dealt with me ever since.

I’d also like to say thank you to James May who smuggled in a bottle of gin for me last night – I shouldn’t have said that out loud – and most importantly sorry to my wife Mindy and my daughters Izzy and Willow. I’m sorry for being such a colossal…Thank you. More news later.

Hammond crashed his Rimac Concept One, an electric super car, while filming the second season of The Grand Tour as he drove through St Gallen, Switzerland.

The car flipped several times but thankfully Hammond managed to crawl away from the vehicle before it caught fire.

Jeremy Clarkson described the crash as the most frightening he’d ever seen and Hammond had to be air lifted to a local hospital.

A spokesperson for The Grand Tour claimed that nobody else was in the car or involved in the accident adding that the cause of the crash is unknown and is being investigated.

Andy Willman the Grand Tour producer told the Sunday Mirror:

Jeremy and James both raced down to the scene of the crash as soon as it happened. When they saw the wreckage on fire they thought Richard was dead. It was really bad.

They were staggered he had got out of it alive, because there was just nothing left. Everyone is so relieved. If Richard had been a few seconds slower getting out, he would have been incinerated.

Hammond is no stranger to accidents – he crashed a jet powered car in 2006 which left him in a coma for two weeks – we wish him the best for a speedy recovery.
