Marvel Studios Dread it. Run from it. Destiny still arrives all the same. And now it is here. Or should I say, Avengers: Endgame is here… nearly.
It’s less than 10 days until Earth’s mightiest heroes assemble once again for what could be the final chapter for many of the original Avengers in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and we here at UNILAD couldn’t be more excited.
In fact, we’re so excited that a number of us have committed to watching every single film in the MCU, even The Incredible Hulk, to prepare ourselves physically and emotionally for Endgame.
We get it though, not everyone has the time, resources, or willpower to commit to sitting down for 45 or so hours. So late last week, when the directors behind Infinity War and Endgame Joe and Anthony Russo, were in London, we went down to ask them what films they think you should watch before diving into Endgame.
Anthony Russo said:
We generally say there are two movies that would set you up well for Endgame. The first is Captain America: Civil War because in that movie we see the conflict between Captain America and Iron man which ends up breaking up The Avengers family.
It’s that broken family that then have to confront Thanos in Infinity War, and because they’re broken and divided they fail. So there’s a continuity of story and continuity of character between Civil War, Infinity War and Endgame that will allow [the auridence] to get really hyped up for Endgame.
Of course, when the Russos hint at a reunion between Steve and Tony any self-respecting journalist is going to try and tease something about their broken friendship out of the filmmakers who split them up in the first place.
Unfortunately, and unsurprisingly considering the level of secrecy around this film, when I asked about the reunion between Iron Man and Cap it went about as well as you can imagine.
Joe Russo said:
We won’t talk anything about the plot of the movie at all. We’re doing our best to protect the movie, we’ve been working really hard on it for the last three years…
Awkward. Thankfully Anthony understood that people like me have bosses who, like J. Jonah Jameson wants pictures of Spider-Man, want their reporters to get sound bites and coerced Joe into giving me a teensy bit of detail about the reunion.
Joe continued:
Okay, well those two characters have a very complicated relationship and they’re very different people and [Civil War] was built all around that with the divide between them and that’s integral to the events of Infinity War. They wouldn’t have lost if they were together, so how and if they’ll repair that relationship will be explored in this movie.
At this point, their publicist was glaring at me so I switched tracks, lest the Marvel Spoiler Sniper Squad (M.S.S.S.) took me out, but there we have it if you can only watch two films before Endgame check out Civil War and Infinity War.
Avengers: Endgame snaps its way into theatres on April 25.
