Jake Gyllenhaal has hinted that Spider-Man will be up against a number of villains in the upcoming film Far From Home.

The stars of the new Marvel movie appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last night (May 9), where they talked all things Avengers: EndgameAgents of SHIELD, and, of course, Spider-Man.

The upcoming Spider-Man film will bring phase three of the Marvel Cinematic Universe to a close, and though poor Peter Parker just wants to have a normal school trip after taking on Thanos and his army, the universe clearly has other plans.

Check out a new clip from Spider-Man: Far From Home here:

The teaser showed Peter (aka Spider-Man, aka Tom Holland) hanging out with Michelle Jones (aka MJ, aka Zendaya) and his other school pals before a huge, watery villain, called Hydro-Man, rose up out of the water and started wreaking havoc on the European city.

Despite his best efforts to escape, Peter got hit with a blast of water which knocked him to the floor. But thankfully Mysterio (played by Gyllenhaal) came to the rescue.

In the Marvel Comics, the character was Spider-Man’s enemy, however the new film puts a twist on their relationship by portraying Mysterio an ally of the superhero.

Which is just as well, because Peter did not look at all prepared to take on Hydro-Man.

Hydro-Man is one of two villains already announced for Spider-Man: Far From Home, with the second being Molten Man, who made an appearance in the film’s official trailer.

Although taking down two villains would no doubt be stressful enough for our friendly neighbourhood Spider-Man, on Jimmy Kimmel Live! Gyllenhaal said something which suggested there could be more bad guys who are yet to be revealed.

On the chat show, the actor referred to the villains as the Elementals, a nickname presumably stemming from the four elements of nature and their appearance in Marvel comics since the 1970s.

Hydro-Man and Molten Man appear to cover the bases when it comes to fire and water, so it doesn’t seem too unreasonable to suggest that there could be villains taking on the roles of earth and air, too.

Speaking to Nerdist about the characters, Far From Home director Jon Watts explained he wanted to think out of the box when it came to challenging Spider-Man.

He said:

Because Mysterio is a hero in our world, I needed villains.

There’s so many Spider-Man villains from the rogues gallery that I wanted to dig a little bit deeper than what anyone might be expecting…villains like Hydro-Man and Molten Man, who may not be on the highest list.

But that opened up such amazing visual possibilities and poses really dangerous challenges for Spider-Man.

There’s only a few weeks to go before the release of Far From Home, so fans won’t have to wait long to find out how many elementals Spider-Man is up against.

Spider-Man: Far From Home is set to be released in the UK on July 5.
