A sequel to Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse is ‘definitely’ in the works, producer Amy Pascal has confirmed.
After the Oscar winning/BAFTA winning/Golden Globe winning/all-round winning success of the first film, a sequel was never really in question.
Particularly because the film was held in such a high regard by Spidey fans, with some even referring to it as the best adaptation of Spider-Man yet.
Take a look at the trailer below:
The news of a sequel is likely receive a warm welcome from fans; since Into The Spider-Verse was released last year, it’s received a 93 per cent audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, with many demanding a follow-up.
We won’t have to wait as long for a sequel as we might have initially thought, as Pascal revealed in an interview with io9 that one is already on the cards.
She explained:
We are definitely hard at work on the sequel. You can expect another movie.
This isn’t the first time a sequel has been alluded to; in November, before Into The Spider-Verse was even released worldwide, news broke that Joaquim Dos Santos (Avatar: The Last Airbender) would be directing a Spider-Verse sequel with David Callaham (The Expendables) writing the script.
Just months later, it was confirmed the film’s producers, Phil Lord and Chris Miller, had signed on to make Spider-Verse TV shows; Pascal added these shows are also progressing.
She said:
We are doing some television and all these things have to make sense together. I think we have some fantastic shows that we’re doing and we’re just putting them together now.
Spider-Man: Into The Spider-Verse follows Brooklyn teenager Miles Morales as he becomes the Spider-Man of his reality.
Crossing paths with counterparts from other dimensions, the ‘Spider-People’ team up to stop Wilson Fisk – also known as the Kingpin – as he presents a threat to all realities.
As per Digital Spy, the sequel will focus on one particular aspect of the first film – the growing romance between Miles and the alternate-reality, superhero version of Gwen Stacy.
Although the movie’s primary focus will be on their growing romance, it’s expected to feature the other Spider-Men too – considering it’s most likely another multi-verse story.
No cast announcements have been made yet, but we expect Shameik Moore and Hailee Steinfeld will reprise their roles as Miles and Gwen at the very least.
