Steve Irwin’s Star On The Walk Of Fame Has Just Been Laid

Aussie legend Steve Irwin has been honoured with a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame.

The late TV personality and general wildlife expert Irwin died at the age of 44 in 2006 after a stingray pierced his heart while he was filming the underwater documentary Ocean’s Deadliest.

His widow, Terri, and their two children, Bindi and Robert, have been in the public eye carrying on his work ever since, and yesterday (Thursday April 26) attended a ceremony on Hollywood Boulevard in LA.

In June, it was announced the legend was to be posthumously honoured with a star for his contribution to the entertainment industry through wildlife documentaries.

According to TIME magazine, Irwin’s is the 2,635th star on the iconic Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Along with his family, hundreds of fans were there for the ceremony, including Australian comedian Rove McManus, chef Curtis Stone, and TV’s Ross Matthew.

Terri, Bindi and Robert unveiled the star and posed for photos with a giant snake.

Bindi posted photos from the ‘special moment’ on Twitter, and wrote:

I’ll remember today forever. Such an emotional moment and beautiful chapter in our lives.

Fans praised Steve and the family on social media with some touching messages left under Bindi’s post.

One wrote:

I miss your dad a lot he had a huge impact om me and the way I look at animals especially ones like crocodiles and other reptiles. I loved his zest for life. But what I loved the most about him was the way he loved his wife and kids as well as the world.

Another added:

He must be very proud of all of you! Thank you for keeping his legacy alive! Well-deserved star, it was about time!

On the Australia Zoo conservation site, a statement from his wife Terri read:

Steve has always said that he didn’t care if anyone remembered him, as long as they remembered his message.

I truly believe that this recognition for Steve’s achievements will ensure that his message of wildlife conservation is remembered.

Irwin, known by all as ‘The Crocodile Hunter’, was one of the world’s best loved television personalities and now in a poll of 100 people conducted by UNILAD he’s been voted the greatest Australian ever.

With over two thirds of the vote conservationist Irwin overwhelmingly beat the likes of actor Hugh Jackman and actress Margot Robbie, nine per cent, to the top spot.

Growing up with crocodiles and pythons, Irwin always had a special bond with wildlife and seemed destined to be the hero he would become.

He first achieved worldwide fame when his television series The Crocodile Hunter became a huge hit in 1996.

Steve and Terri hosted the show which documented the couple’s travels around the world and their animal rescue work.

The first episode actually featured footage from their honeymoon where they spent it rescuing crocodiles together in Australia.

As well as making various popular television shows including Croc Files, The Crocodile Hunter Diaries and New Breed Vets, the couple also owned and operated Australia Zoo which was founded by Steve’s parents.

On September 4, 2006, the world was shocked as reports of Irwin’s death hit the headlines.

While filming Ocean’s Deadliest, at Batt Reef near Queensland, Irwin approached a stingray which pierced him in his heart with its tail.

Robert Irwin was a guest on US chat show The Tonight Show With Jimmy Fallon, where he spoke of his father, and love of animals.
