Kingsman star Taron Egerton has revealed he won’t be back to play Eggsy in the third instalment.

Egerton played a leading role in the action-packed films alongside Colin Firth, with the original Kingsman following the story of Eggsy finding his way into the Secret Service and becoming a well-dressed spy working to stop the bad guys of the world.

Sort of like James Bond, but with weaponized umbrellas.

Kingsman was released in January 2015 and became one of director Matthew Vaughn’s most successful films, grossing over $414.4 million worldwide.

The sequel Kingsman: The Golden Circle was released in 2017, coming in close behind the original, grossing $410.9 million.

28-year-old Egerton is currently working on his latest film Robin Hood, and in an interview with Yahoo! Movies the actor revealed he wouldn’t be returning as Eggsy in the third Kingsman, which is set to be released in 2019.

The Eddie The Eagle star explained it didn’t necessarily mean he was stepping away from the project altogether, saying:

I don’t know how hot off the press this is, and I think I’m allowed to say it, but I’m not in the next Kingsman movie.

That doesn’t mean I won’t be in Kingsman ever again. I was with Matthew [Vaughn] as little as a few days ago, we’re still very much in business together, but his next journey in that world doesn’t involve me.

The third movie is set to be a prequel focusing on the Secret Service’s missions during the early 20th Century – so admittedly it would be quite confusing if Eggsy turned up somewhere in the early 1900s, despite still being a young man in the first two modern-era movies.

Kingsman 3, which Collider report will be titled Kingsman: The Great Game, will introduce a teen named Conrad, who wants to fight in World War I, as well as a new adult character.

Egerton revealed he’s had talks with Vaughn about the plot of the third movie, and it sounds like we’re in for a treat.

The actor revealed:

His idea for the new one is incredibly exciting. I’m sad that I won’t be on that journey with him but it’s not the last you’ve seen of Eggsy.

In an interview with Square Mile, the actor explained how he was drawn to the role of Eggsy in Kingsman, saying:

I just read [the script] and went, ‘Sh*t, I know what to do with that. Not in an arrogant way, I just felt very, very strongly that I was the man to play the role.

It wasn’t a guaranteed success, but even from the very early stages – something about [director] Matthew, something about the script, the story, the design of everything, the cast – I was always confident that it was going to have something quite special about it.

Hopefully Eggsy will be back with some more cool weapons and sharp suits before too long!

Kingsman 3 is set to be released on November 9, 2019.
