Fans tuning in to watch the 2016 Teen Choice Awards were left upset and disappointed on Sunday night.
Christina Grimmie posthumously won her first Teen Choice Award on Sunday, but neither her award nor her name was mentioned during the two-hour ceremony on FOX.
In fact, even as the show called for an end to gun violence, it didn’t mention Grimmie’s name once, Elite Daily reports.
People quickly took to Twitter to share their thoughts, with Christina’s followers accusing FOX of using her death as a way to promote the show.
Back in June, The Voice singer was shot and killed while signing autographs in Orlando, Florida.
And while an entire segment of the awards show was dedicated to ending gun violence – with Jessica Alba, Ne-Yo, and victims from the San Bernardino, Newton and Orlando shootings taking to the stage – Grimmie’s name was never mentioned.
According to Grimmie’s manager, Brian Teefey, it was her third year in a row being nominated for this award.
Fans were initially excited to hear about Christina Grimmie’s nomination, and while she ended up winning the Choice Web Star award, her followers made it clear they expected the ceremony to at least pay tribute or acknowledge the singer in some way.
Now, because the Teen Choice Awards contains over 50 awards, they are unable to announce every single award given out during the two-hour show. Consequently, some of the winners are announced after the ceremony ends, Teen Vogue reports.
But while this may be true, Grimmie was a talented singer whose death was devastating and shocking. To not mention her at the Teen Choice Awards – especially where there is an entire segment on gun violence – is, as fans have said, completely unacceptable.
Here’s to hoping the show releases an apology.
