The announcement silenced rumours that The Big Bang Theory was reaching the end of the road, with Johnny Galecki, Jim Parsons and Kaley Cuoco all on board.

Simon Helberg and Kunal Nayyar who play the dynamic duo Howard and Raj have also agreed to the two-year contract extension, with Melissa Rauch (Bernadette) and Mayim Bialik (Amy) expected to sign up to 48 more episodes shortly.

It is likely CBS were spurred on to extend the highest-rated sitcom after a spin-off show centred around a young Sheldon Cooper was greenlit, reports Digital Spy.

Young Sheldon, produced and narrated by Jim Parsons, will follow the story of the child prodigy as he meanders through the right-wing Texas society where he grew up, discovering his skill for science.
