CBS has just released the first teaser trailer for its upcoming series Star Trek: Picard, and it looks incredible.

Sir Patrick Stewart is back with a bang for the spinoff series which will air on CBS All Access streaming service later this year.

Okay, so it’s not the longest trailer we’ve ever seen, but it sets the scene for the upcoming series, which seems to be based on an older Admiral Jean-Luc Picard.

Based on what we can see, it seems as if Picard has retired from his iconic role as an admiral in Starfleet in a bid to run his family’s vineyards in France. But the peace doesn’t seem set to last as he’s inevitably called back into action.

The series is set in Star Trek’s main timeline and will begin with Picard years after his final appearance in Star Trek: Nemesis, back in 2002.

In the trailer, we hear an unknown voice say:

Fifteen years ago, today, you led us out of the darkness. You commanded the greatest rescue armada in history. Then, the unimaginable.

While we can’t be certain what she’s referring to, an educated guess could lead us to believe she’s referring to the destruction of the Romulan homeworld of Romulus, which was destroyed in the last major film in Star Trek’s continuity.

CBS

She continues by asking:

Tell us: why did you leave Starfleet, admiral?

At this point in time, we have no idea what occurred 15 years ago to prompt him to step down from his role, but whatever happened all that time ago still seems to have a heavy impact on Picard.

At present no release date has been set for Star Trek: Picard, but it’s likely we should be set to find out more before it airs later this year.
