The Lonely Island announced a mysterious new project yesterday, but thankfully fans didn’t have long to wait before the big reveal.
Usually announcements, teasers and trailers for new projects arrive weeks, if not months before a finished product, but the comedy trio clearly decided to avoid the risk of losing any hype during the build up by announcing their new creation just hours before its release.
Yesterday (May 22), the official Lonely Island Twitter account released a short video, along with the simple caption ‘Midnight @netflix’.
Check it out here:
Of course, those of us who are already awake and going about our Thursdays will be aware that midnight passed hours ago, but as we’re presumably in a different time zone to the one The Lonely Island are currently in, the new release dropped just minutes ago, at 12am PDT, 8am GMT.
It’s titled The Lonely Island Presents: The Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience, and is essentially a compilation of music videos lasting half an hour, consisting of hilarious rapping and brilliant outfits.
The teaser didn’t give away much information about the creation, simply revealing it was a ‘visual poem’, but that didn’t stop people getting hyped up, with many fans pledging to stay up until the mysterious creation appeared on Netflix.
The excitement was fuelled further by a couple of celebrities who seemed to be in the know about the Unauthorized Bash Brothers Experience, namely White Chicks actor Busy Philipps, and singer Sia.
Busy retweeted The Lonely Island’s teaser, and wrote:
You really don’t want to miss this. It is BEYOND.
While Sia added a more cryptic and intriguing comment, tweeting:
Team Sia.
Though many people might be more familiar with Andy Samberg’s recent work on Brooklyn Nine-Nine, he is part of the comedy trio along with Akiva Schaffer and Jorma Taccone.
The Lonely Island have been responsible for a whole host of incredible and hilarious content in the past, so hopefully fans will find their visual album just as entertaining.
They wrote and featured on Saturday Night Live, created a number of undeniable bangers, like D*ck In A Box, I’m On A Boat, I Just Had Sex, and Jack Sparrow, and even had their own movie, Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping.
According to VT, the trio will be going on tour this summer for the first time, so fans will be able to sing along to their greatest hits at at the Bonnaroo Music Festival, as well as in Washington D.C., Philadelphia, New York, Brooklyn, Boston, Detroit and Minneapolis.
I’m sure the new Netflix release will only make fans love them more!
