Despite a general consensus that Venom was a bit of a letdown after the huge hype that surrounded its release, the film was still a huge hit at the box office.

And now the creators behind the film have confirmed Tom Hardy will reprise his role as Eddie Brock in Venom 2.

Sony producer Amy Pascal kept her cards close to her chest when discussing the sequel with Fandango, but she did reveal the British actor would be back.

She told the publication:

I can say that Tom Hardy will be back, magnificently playing that character as no one else can.

Venom follows the story of journalist Eddie Brock, who gains super powers after getting bound to a parasitic alien symbiote.

As Spider-Man fans will already know, Venom was originally created to act as the superhero’s nemesis, when he was introduced in an edition of The Amazing Spider-Man back in 1984.

However, Spider-Man and Venom haven’t shared the same screen since 2007 in Sam Raimi’s Spider-Man 3, where the character was actually played by Topher Grace, however there was a tiny cameo from Venom in The Amazing Spider-Man 2, which was released in 2014.

If you thought that was confusing Venom is part of the Sony Marvel Universe rather than the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Sony says the film is in the same universe as the most recent Spider-Man movie starring Tom Holland. This has sparked fresh hope among fans who are eagerly waiting for a crossover in the two superhero’s lives.

Now it seems that possibility is closer than ever, according to Marvel Studios president Kevin Feige, who revealed in a recent interview that it’s likely to happen.

However, last year saw the release of Hardy’s Venom, which gave the character his own origin story that basically poo-pooed any reason for him to be Spider-Man’s nemesis. But Marvel is keen to get the two characters back together.

Speaking of a potential crossover, Feige said:

I think probably it’s up to Sony.

Sony has both those characters and has Venom in their world. I don’t know what their plans are for another Venom or if they’re doing that.

But it seems likely at some point.

If it means getting to see more of Tom Hardy’s Eddie Brock then we’re here for it.
