The first trailer for a new Netflix series starring Idris Elba has dropped, and it looks hilarious.
Luther and The Wire star Elba is also a successful DJ, having performed at Glastonbury, opened for Madonna on her Rebel Heart tour, and played at Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding last year.
Better known in the music world as ‘DJ Big Driis’ or ‘Big Driis the Londoner’, Elba is even playing Coachella next month.
Despite being a DJ in real life, Elba will also play one in the upcoming Netflix show Turn Up Charlie. However, he’ll play a struggling artist who reluctantly takes a job as a nanny.
In a press release, the streaming service revealed more details:
Turn Up Charlie centers on the titular Charlie (Idris Elba), a struggling DJ and eternal bachelor, who is given a final chance at success when he reluctantly becomes a ‘manny’ to his famous best friend’s problem-child daughter, Gabby (Frankie Hervey). Piper Perabo and JJ Feild co-star.
Elba and Gary Reich co-created Turn Up Charlie and will serve as executive producers along with Tristram Shapeero. Shapeero will also direct the series with Matt Lipsey. Martin Joyce and Ana Garanito are co-executive producers. The series is co-produced by Reich’s Brown Eyed Boy Productions and Elba’s Green Door Pictures.

While Elba is best known for his acting career, in an interview with the Press Association in 2017, the Londoner revealed how music is extremely important to him.
As reported by the Irish Independent, Elba said:
Music is a passion because I don’t get paid for it. I love acting, producing and directing but music is a labour of love.
I make tunes but it’s mostly DJing and right now I am diving into the pinnacle of that career – I’m being given all these opportunities to play in these great places so I’m going to go for it.
Turn Up Charlie therefore combines two of his greatest loves – music and acting.

The fact his new show is being released soon makes me feel better about the fact I can’t afford a Coachella ticket!
Coachella will take place April 12 to 14 and April 19 to 21 in Indio, California this year.
Turn Up Charlie will be released on Netflix March 15.
