Warning: Spoilers
Just so I can’t be blamed for any SPOILERS, I’ll warn you again; this article contains SPOILERS for the first episode of Game of Thrones season eight, so if you don’t want to hear any SPOILERS, look away now.
The first episode of the highly anticipated new series aired last night/this morning – depending where in the world you are – marking the beginning of the end for fans, and finally revealing some of the plot details viewers have spent the last 20 months trying to predict.
Okay, last chance to turn away before SPOILERS.
Episode one saw Arya Stark reunite with skilled blacksmith Gendry in a brief, flirty encounter – because it wouldn’t be Game of Thrones without some sexual tension – where she asks him to make a weapon for her.
The assassin had obviously put some thought into a design which would complement her kick-ass skills as she presented Gendry with a drawing, so although viewers didn’t see the completed creation, they did get a clue as to what it might look like.
Here it is:
With some sort of removable section and what appears to be two pointy ends, this isn’t your average sword. It looks as if it could be a double-ended spear which could separate into two daggers – one of which is made of Dragonglass, according to the drawing.
Game of Thrones has presented its fair share of weapons over the past eight years, and as the show’s weapons master (great job title), Tommy Dunne and his team designed and built them all.
In a recent interview with Vanity Fair’s Still Watching podcast, Dunne spoke about an impressive new weapon which’ll be introduced in the final season, and from what we learnt in last night’s episode, it’s pretty likely he was referring to Arya’s.
The weapons master said:
There is one creation in Season 8 that is absolutely phenomenal. It’ll be a showstopper. That was great to finish.
It was great to make, great to design it, that it was about to be reverse-engineered and made into two different items.
I’m sure this showstopping weapon will come in handy when its owner enters into the biggest battle in TV history!
After Arya made her request to Gendry, fans were quick to speculate about the weapon, taking guesses at what it could be.
In a Reddit thread, many users agreed it appears to be some sort of spear, with one writing:
That shot from the trailer during the battle looked like she was fighting with a spear so it could be.
While another commented:
There were too many scenes of her learning to fight (blind) with a staff for that talent not to be used again.
A staff with an attatchable dragonglass dagger would be a better weapon than Needle if she’s going up against White Walkers, plus she’s tiny so she needs all the reach she can get.
Another Reddit user wrote:
Tip is clearly labeled as Dragonglass. Almost looks like a blow dart but that doesn’t make any sense and would be too heavy.
If it’s any other projectile I can’t recall if Arya has access to a crossbow or longbow.
Hopefully it won’t be long before Arya’s new weapon is revealed; I’m sure Gendry will do a good job!
