Will Ferrell Gives Update On Whether We’re Getting A Step Brothers Sequel

Step Brothers hit our screens back in 2008 – and immediately became the most quotable film ever, garnering love and hate in equal measure from audiences globally.

From the very moment we were introduced to Night Hawk and Dragon – played by Will Ferrell and John C. Reilly – the useless buffoons secured a place in many hearts and cult movie history.

Almost a decade later and Ferrell, who also co-wrote the Step Brothers script, has given an interview with Rolling Stone saying the chances of a sequel are increasingly slim.

Ferrell told Rolling Stone:

You have to resist the temptation. It’s just tough because the things everyone wants you to do sequels of are special because there’s not a sequel of it. I guess we’ll see, but as of now there are no plans. We just don’t want to be doing sequels of everything.

Perhaps Ferrell is put off by some of the negative critique concerning Anchorman 2, which got the greenlight in 2012 and delayed any prospect of producing a Step Brothers sequel.

But Adam McKay, the film’s director is convinced a sequel would work somewhere down the line of the fictional narrative when Brennan and Dale have reached old age, still refusing to grow up.

McKay told Rolling Stone:

There’s so many projects Will and I have together. We just wrote a script together that I think is as funny as anything we’ve ever written, so I don’t know if we are dying to do another Step Brothers.

But like I said, I never would say never. I just never know what’s going on in eight, nine years, so it could happen.

Meanwhile, Ferrell is unconvinced by a reunion sequel years from now, adding:

Then do [the characters] become pathetic? Possibly funnier, I guess. But maybe more pathetic.

We did have a great idea and got real close, but it just didn’t happen.

Between licking white dog shit, tea-bagging drum sets and singing opera at the fuckin’ Catalina Wine Mixer, maybe these two step brothers have been through enough… For now.

Meanwhile, I’m sure they’re enjoying worldwide prestige, boats and hoes up in movie character purgatory.
