Get ready for a pang of nostalgia, 90s kids, because one of the most iconic animated series of the time looks like it could be set for a reboot.

The team behind the much-loved X-Men: The Animated Series is reportedly lining up a comeback, as rumour has it they’re working on a pitch at their new home with Disney.

According to longtime X-Men artist Larry Houston, the team want to pick up right where they left off with the series, which ran from 1992 to 1997.

According to a scoop from The Hollywood Reporter, the creative team behind the animated series want to continue the series with the same aesthetic too.

As Larry Houston said:

The one thing we’d like to do more than anything else is to continue where we left off.

For a Saturday morning cartoon, X-Men: The Animated Series pushed the boundaries of serialised storytelling. Running for a total of 76 episodes over five seasons, the series was one of the first of its kind to carry story arcs through multiple episodes.

Among the story lines the animated series adapted from the comic books was Dark Phoenix, and seeing as the film as come out to very middling reviews, an animated reboot may just be the ticket the X-Men franchise needs to revive itself.

The original cast of the animated series are said to be appearing at this year’s Comic Con in Los Angeles, so I’m sure that’ll spark even more drive for an animated reboot.

Now Marvel Studios has been brought under the Disney umbrella, fans may be waiting some time before they see the much-fated entrance of the X-Men into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

As Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige told ComicBook:

It’ll be a while. It’s all just beginning and the five-year plan that we’ve been working on, we were working on before any of that was set.

So really it’s much more, for us, less about specifics of when and where [the X-Men will appear] right now and more just the comfort factor and how nice it is that they’re home. That they’re all back. But it will be a very long time.

While we may be waiting a while, with everything the studio has in store for the MCU for the foreseeable future, there’s plenty to keep us entertained.

Dark Phoenix is in cinemas now.
