In his next project legendary British actor Tom Hardy is set to take on a role like none other, infamous American gangster Al Capone.
We have been excited to see Hardy as the notorious crime boss, nicknamed ‘Scarface’, since news of his casting was announced back in 2016.
With cameras due to start rolling on the film which is titled Fonzo, Hardy has been sharing photos from the set on his personal Instagram giving us a first look at the actor in costume.
Yesterday the 40-year-old posted a snap which shows him sitting down in what appears to be a prison uniform, sporting a shaven head.
Captioned ‘chasing Fonzo’, Hardy appears to be in the wardrobe department as he is surrounded by racks of clothes with labels on them.
If the film is as grey and moody as the photo, then it looks like we are in for a real treat!
Having played the brutal Charles Bronson in Bronson, both Kray brothers in Legend and gang leader Alfie Solomons in Peaky Blinders, Hardy has portrayed his fair share of mobsters meaning he is well suited to take on Capone.
As reported by Variety, the upcoming biopic will tell the story of Capone as dementia sets in bringing forward past memories of his violent lifestyle.
The official synopsis is as follows:
Once a ruthless businessman and bootlegger who ruled Chicago with an iron fist, Al Capone was the most infamous and feared gangster of American lore.
At the age of 47, following nearly a decade of imprisonment, dementia rots Al’s mind and his past becomes present as harrowing memories of his violent and brutal origins melt into his waking life.
When Capone was released he was in poor health shortly dying of a heart attack in 1947 at the age of 48.
The film, which has been in development for a few years, is due to be directed by Josh Trank the man behind the groundbreaking science-fiction film Chronicle in 2012 and the critically panned Fantastic Four reboot in 2015.
Currently in pre-production, as seen on Hardy’s Instagram, filming is due to start in early April.
Although there is no official release date yet, hopefully it won’t be long until Fonzo hits the big screen.
As film fans and history buffs will know, this isn’t the first time Capone has been tackled by Hollywood although the majority of portrayals focus on the crime boss during the Prohibition years.
Most famously the great Robert De Niro took on the brutal mobster in 1987’s The Untouchables meaning Hardy has a tough act to follow.
We are sure he will smash it though!
If you are suffering from Hardy related withdrawal symptoms and unable to wait until Fonzo, it isn’t long until his next film is out, the highly anticipated Venom.
In the comic book adaptation Hardy will play Eddie Brock, a journalist who becomes bonded with an alien symbiote that subsequently gives him incredible powers.
Together, they are Venom; an anti-hero that protects the innocent.
Venom swings his way into cinemas October 5.
