Oscar-winning actor Jennifer Lawrence has worn clothes again and the Internet has several opinions on the matter.

The 27-year-old Red Sparrow lead graced the London skyline, alongside Joel Edgerton, Jeremy Irons, Matthias Schoenaerts and director Francis Lawrence, for the film’s photocall yesterday.

As temperatures dropped to a cool three degrees celsius, the movie’s male contingent wrapped up warm with multiple layers of clothing and Lawrence, she donned a plunging Versace number.

Lawrence’s dress – which was a little more than reminiscent of Elizabeth Hurley’s iconic Versace number from way back when – has some people up in arms.

Meanwhile, her male cohorts seem to be wearing more layers than Joey when he tries on all of Chandler’s clothes and starts lunging.

Observers were quick to point out the disparity, as they posed on the balcony of London’s Corinthia Hotel.

Some thought the photograph highlighted the difference between treatment of men and women in Hollywood.

Helen Lewis tweeted:

This is such a quietly depressing (and revealing) image. Not least because I’ve been outside today and it’s bloody freezing.

A topical tweet, considering the recent anniversary for Women’s Suffrage, from Sara Tasker reads: “#CoatsForWomen! (& a good pair of tights)”

Elizabeth Pears asked: “Did the topic of a coat ever come up?”

Some, who seemingly don’t understand the contractual obligations of some actors to wear what stylists select for photocalls, were confused by the lack of coat.

Kris chimed in:

Did producers provide those coasts to the other cast members? Or did she just not want to wear a coat?

I don’t understand the issue?

Lola Whiffen was less than sympathetic when she posted:

They look embarrassed for her because I’m sure she can afford to buy a coat. I’m sure she knew what the weather was like before she walked out the door. Seriously.

Actually, it turns out she did have one and just took it off for the photographs, presumably so she still got paid by Versace to show off their dress in all its splendour.

Yet it didn’t stop the whole scene looking more than a bit bizarre – and a damning indictment of how Hollywood lives and dies by capitalist gains.

And just because she’s a woman she has to show skin and that gets dollars rolling in?

Wow so much equality and non-oppression.

She gets to wear Versace for free. In return she models it. Yeah she’s outside. Yeah she’s probably cold but all of us have aspects of our jobs we don’t like. I’m not losing sleep over it. There are worse jobs.

Lawrence plays prima ballerina-turned-spy, Dominika Egorova in this year’s upcoming Red Sparrow, which seems to gleefully embrace all the classic tropes of overtly sexualised leading ladies, while claiming to be empowering.

To be fair, I’d probably trade with Lawrence right now – if I had the acting skill and PR prowess – because I can’t believe I’m still writing about women’s clothes and the dismissal of their choice to do what they want with their bodies.

You keep doing you, J-Law.
