Reaper by name, reaper by nature. The Carolina Reaper Challenge has claimed many a challenger’s dignity, and their underpants. Now the ‘Angry Ginger Kid’ has fallen prey.
Plenty have tried, and plenty have failed, to stop the fireworks in their mouth and stomach as they chomp away on literally the hottest chilli in the world, a record held since 2013 when the ghost pepper lost its fiery crown.
To give some sense of perspective, the average Carolina Reaper is around 1,569,300 SHU on the Scoville Scale. Your friendly kitchen cupboard companion paprika is usually around 100 – 1,000 SHU, with spicy fajita favourite jalapeno typically falling within the vicinity of 3,500 to 10,000 SHU.
Just to be perfectly clear, this is not the bit of extra pizzazz that you like with your Saturday night curry. This is molten levels of pain that has the potential to cause seizures.
Enter Michael Kittrell, aka Copper Cab, aka the Angry Ginger Kid. Unlikely celebrity Michael rose to prominence on YouTube through his potty mouthed rants, covering topics such as ‘gingers having souls’.
Michael is a hot tempered guy, with hair to match, but even he fell victim to the Carolina Reaper’s wrath. He begins the video by admitting that he is “really f*cking nervous”, deliberating over the challenge before eventually eating the chilli using a protective glove. What happened next was dramatic to say the least.
In the stomach churning footage, Michael can be seen having a violent reaction to the chilli, with an explosion coming out of both ends. He has a fit of diarrhoea before stripping off to his underpants. He then proceeds to throw up and is taken to hospital where I’m sure the doctors were super impressed…

Luckily, Michael has now fully recovered from the ordeal. However, we have a feeling that he will be giving the vindaloo a miss for a while….
