Domino’s New Futuristic Delivery Method Could Be An Absolute Game Changer

Amazon think they’re all that with their delivery drones, well it looks like Domino’s Pizza are trying to go one better.

Fancy having a robot delivering your pizza? Well, that could be the future of pizza delivery at this rate if Domino’s have anything to do with it.

They plan to trial this futuristic method in New Zealand and it’s thought to be the first of its kind in the world.

The 3-ft high, four-wheeled Domino’s Robotic Unit (DRU for short) is fitted with compartments to ensure the food it is delivering stays hot and drinks cold. The heated compartment can hold up to 10 pizzas, AFP reported.

If you’re worried about your Pepperoni Passion or Mighty Meaty going MIA, DRU also has cameras to avoid being kidnapped.

As it arrives at your place, you will receive a text message with a code that unlocks the order and allows you to collect your pizza. Genius.

And it’s got a pretty wide scope too. Its onboard sensors and battery will allow it to travel within a 12.5 mile radius of its store.

Speaking to the International Business Times , CEO and Managing Director Don Meij said:

The DRU prototype is only the first step in our research and development as we continue to develop a range of innovations set to revolutionise the entire pizza ordering experience.

The initiative doesn’t have an official trial date yet, but it has the full support of the New Zealand government. Their Transport Minister Simon Bridges called it an ‘exciting opportunity’ for the country to help test these brand new technologies.

New Zealand general manager Scott Bush told AFP:

DRU is cheeky and endearing and we are confident that one day he will become an integral part of the Domino’s family.

So many questions do remain unanswered though. Could they phase out human delivery for good? Could this be rolled out worldwide? Would DRU accept (or expect) tips?

All we know is that we are pretty damn excited about this.
