Domino’s Pizza Is Much More Expensive In The UK Than Around The World

A medium pepperoni pizza in the UK costs £15.99 – that’s more than one hour’s pay for most British workers.

If it sounds outrageous, it is. As researched by Metro, if you live in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland, you’re getting ripped off at Domino’s.

In other parts of the world, pizza is classified as a ‘cheap takeaway option’. In the UK? It’s one of the most expensive, if not the most expensive.

And we’re not the only ones to have noticed:

In Australia, any value pizza (like cheese and pepperoni) is $5 when you pick up – that’s £3.05 for an entire medium-sized pizza.

In New Zealand, you can save yourself one cent – the same pizza is $4.99, or £2.87.

Even the U.S. and Canada are getting better deals. In Toronto, a medium pepperoni comes in at $12.29 (£7.47 – or nearly half the price of a pizza in the UK). In New York it’s $13.99 or £11.14, which is still overpriced for some cheese and meat on dough, but better than the UK’s outrageous £15.99.

Sam Borland-Smith, 23, who moved over to the UK from Australia told Metro.co.uk she finds it ‘hard to understand’ how the basic takeaway is so expensive.

She said:

I was shocked when I first moved here and saw the price of Domino’s pizza.

It was very much a go-to pizza place for my friends and I back home when we wanted something super quick and really affordable.

I assumed it would be the same over here, and was looking forward to having the same experiences with my UK friends, but that is definitely not the case.

It’s hard to understand how the exact same product, from the exact same brand and business, can differ so drastically in price. It’s ridiculous.

But Domino’s is holding it’s ground.

Speaking to Metro, Louise Butler, a spokesperson for the pizza giant, said:

We think the fresh, hand-made taste of Domino’s is unique but we do all we can to make it as affordable as possible.

The average price customers pay for a medium cheese and tomato is £7.67 because of our competitive deals and bundles.

However, unfortunately, comparisons including, rent, petrol, labour and food costs all vary greatly internationally.

But it’s hard to look the other way when you’re paying £15.99 for some dough and cheese.

Let’s add in the fact that in 2011, it was reported that Domino’s was making a 900 per cent profit on each margherita pizza – which costs £1.25 to create, apparently – and that medium pizza may taste more like a slap in the face than anything else.
