An Italian court has ruled in favour of a divorced father who paid his child support in the form of pizzas.
Pizza baker Nicolo Toso, was taken to court for failing to pay child support following his divorce from Nicoletta Zuin in 2002, reports the Telegraph.
The 50-year-old was hit hard by the 2008 economic crisis, so paid his ex-wife in pizzas, calzone and other goods from the place he worked instead of the €400 (£300) stipulated in the divorce agreement.
However, a judge has now acquitted Mr Toso, ruling he had done his best during hard times to provide for his daughter.
Judge Chiara Bitozzi said:
In lieu of money, the defendant offered his ex-wife the same amount of compensation in the form of take-away pizzas from his workplace, an offer promptly rejected as ‘beggar’s change’.
Mr Toso’s defence argued that he had been true to all his other custody obligations – only resorting to paying in pizza because he ‘had truly fallen on hard times’.
The relationship between Mr Toso’s ex-wife and his daughter later deteriorated to the point where his daughter moved back in with her father, his new wife and his three other children.
And in a final twist, a civil court has ruled the mother must now pay Mr Toso €300 (£230) in child support per month.
Well, that backfired!
