It’s a sunny Saturday, and many Brits will be stockpiling hot dog sausages for impromptu BBQs.
However, there aren’t enough buns in the whole of your local Tesco that could hold the meaty monster from ‘the original hot dog’, Feltman’s of Coney Island.
To mark 152 years since Charles Feltman’s invented the hot dog, the sausage connoisseurs put in their bid for the Guinness World Record for ‘Largest Hot Dog’.
At 5 ft long and 1 ft wide, this is unlike any hot dog you will see this summer. And at a stonking 66lbs, you’d struggle to pick it up with one hand while sipping a beer in the other.
The humongous dog was cooked up at a block party – on a six foot grill no less – with meaty slices dished out for a very good cause.
According to a Facebook post from Feltman’s, money raised went to support mental health care for post 9/11 combat victims.:
Hungry crowds gathered for an afternoon Feltman’s Day block party in front of Ulysses’ Restaurant in downtown NYC where Feltman’s mammoth ‘dog was cooked up on a six-foot grill before being weighed in and dished out for a $10 donation/slice to benefit the NYC-based nonprofit, Headstrong Project, which provides cost-free mental health care to post 9/11 combat veterans.
The final measurements of the hot dog have since been submitted to Guinness Book for official review, with the sausage world holding its breath as they await the verdict.
No doubt Charles Feltman himself would have been proud of his successors’ mammoth accomplishment.
