InstagramA few weeks back we brought you news of yet another instalment in the ‘rainbow coloured foods’ craze – the rainbow cheese toastie.
The multicoloured snack originated in Hong Kong at the grilled cheese sandwich company KALA Toast, but it seems the craze has now hit the UK.
According to Business Insider – for one day only – London-based street food company Grill My Cheese will be selling their version of the garish toasted sandwich out of its stall on Holborn’s Leather Lane Market between 12 pm and 2 pm.
At a price of £7.50, the toastie is made out of different cheeses (including goats cheese) infused with ingredients like beetroot, rocket, roasted red onion (with added colouring), and truffle oil to create the rainbow effect.
Nisha Patel from Grill My Cheese told Business Insider:
We tried really hard to make the colour as natural as possible, and more importantly, make sure the sandwich was delicious.
This will be the second time Grill My Cheese is selling the toastie and apparently its return is due to popular demand: “It went down extremely well, and there has been a lot of demand for it,” Nisha said.
It’s unclear whether the rainbow toastie will become a permanent menu item but a review of the Hong Kong version says:
The toast was crispy but I reckon both the flavour of the lavender and tomato were subtle.
The basil flavour was the most outstanding one comparatively but the cheese flavour still was not as strong as my expectation. It was also a bit oily in general.
Admittedly the Grill My Cheese version could be tastier but I’m afraid I’m not sold guys…
