New year, new start and all that. A lot of people like tasking themselves with something to change, whether it’s less drinking (fat chance) or simply losing weight, but we have a pretty decent idea for you.
I know it’s a bit preachy, considering we all definitely have a Christmas hangover- full to the brim with turkey. But giving up meat could do you a whole lotta good.
But don’t get me wrong, we don’t want shove veg down your fucking throat..
Or tell you to eat vegan bacon- as you’d almost certainly do this…
But here are some generally decent reasons to ditch the meat, in favour of some veggie alternatives.
It Helps the Global Poor
The entire cattle population alone eats enough food equal to the calorific needs of 8.7 billion people- that’s about 1.3 billion more than human population on Earth.
By feeding grain to the 1 billion people on Earth who are starving instead of farm animals people, everyone would have enough to eat. It seems a bit bit of a no brainer to eat a bit less meat if you care about global poverty.
It Will Make You Better In Bed
Recent studies have found that having a plant-based diet boosts your hormone levels and heightens your sexual activity.
Vegan foods especially like avocado, almonds and chickpeas are rich in zinc and are said to raise testosterone levels and increase your sexual libido. Just to make matters even better OKCupid also found that vegetarians prefer giving oral sex.
I think you can call that a win win win really…
Eating Meat Supports Cruelty to Animals
Roaming green pastures and beautiful barnyard scenes are more of a dream, than a reality for more than 95% of animals raised for human consumption.
Whether it’s being crammed into grim wire cages, being beaten or being killed inhumanely they don’t get much of a decent life. Some won’t even get to feel the warmth of the sun on their backs or breathe fresh air.
The best way to show your respect for animals is not eating them. Simple.
It Helps The Environment
A United Nations report found that eating meat is ‘one of the most significant contributors to the most serious environmental problems, at every scale from local to global’.
This is because rearing animals for food requires a huge amount of land, food, energy and water. Scientists earlier this year back this up and warned us that we will have to cut meat consumption in half just to avoid the worst consequences of climate change.
Forget energy efficient bulbs, if you really want to do your bit for the environment remove meat from your diets.
If You Wouldn’t Eat a Dog, You Shouldn’t Eat A Hog… Or A Chicken
If you guys are horrified at the thought of stuffing and roasting your canine companion, you should feel just as disgusted at the sight of a hog roast, apparently.
Pigs are just as loving, intelligent and capable of feeling pain and suffering as our pups. A few recent studies have also shown that chickens are pretty clever too and are actually smarter than cats, dogs and even able to figure out problems monkeys cant.
Definitely a lot more useful then McNugget fodder…
It Reduces Your Risk Of Heart Disease
A healthy diet consisting of all things veggie is not surprisingly very good for your health and offers protections against a load of diseases, including the UK’s biggest killer of men. Heart disease.
Research links heart disease with a meat-based diets, because the animal fats are simply killing us. But doctors have discovered that a vegan diet has a 100 per cent success rate in preventing and reversing heart disease. So a plant-based diet doesn’t seem like a bad idea now, ay?
You Will Spend Less Money
This does kind of state the obvious, but a vegetarian diet is massively less expensive than a carnivorous one. Give up meat and you’ll feel rich. End of.
So, are you ready to give it a try?
