I wasn’t introduced to the delights of an Espresso Martini until about a year ago at my 21st birthday party, and I couldn’t believe what a treat I’d been missing out on!
Arguably among the more addictive members of the fancy cocktail family, coffee liqueur mixed with vodka – among a few other key ingredients – transformed my nights out from there on out.
So imagine my joy when I discovered an Espresso Martini brunch, right here in the UK, complete with a choice of mouthwatering, signature dishes.
London-based restaurant and bar, Tanner & Co – who are based in the trendy Bermondsey area – have answered our coffee prayers. Or covfefe if you’re Donald Trump.
Available at the weekend only – because who can drink that much while on a lunch hour at work – it’s reasonably priced too – especially for the capital, at £40 on a Saturday and £35 on a Sunday.
According to their website, the have a choice of signature dishes which include:
– Beef, bacon and cheddar burger…beetroot chutney.
– Vegan burger…vegan falafel burger, curried soy and cashew nut sauce, toasted turmeric bun.
– Avocado sourdough…poached eggs, smashed avocado, chilli flakes on toasted sourdough.
– The fancy kebab…spiced yoghurt chicken shish, toasted flat bread, red cabbage pickle with pomegranate, shredded iceberg and garlic yoghurt sauce, chilli sauce.
I won’t lie, the fancy kebab sounds, and looks amazing – I can already imagine my Sunday morning hangover being washed away with this delectable dish!
And that’s not all. You get a ‘sugar fix’ thrown in too! Warm chocolate and nut brownie, accompanied with berry compote. Perfect for those of who, like me who, have a major sweet tooth.
And for what they refer to as ‘The Weapon’, when it comes to drinks, you get a little special something not found with traditional brunches, which include beer, cider, fizz and (sometimes) a Bloody Mary.
They’re throwing in Espresso Martinis. Winner!
In case you’re wondering what an Espresso Martini is, or enjoy them but just don’t know how to make them, here’s a little Christmas gift from me to you.
Well, it’s from Jamie Oliver actually, courtesy of John Quilter, but it’s the thought that counts, so feast your eyes around this.
I’ll start with what ingredients you’ll need:
– 50ml Grey Goose vodka, 35ml coffee liqueur, 25ml of espresso and some ice.
(I reckon if you use any other type of vodka apart from Grey Goose you’ll be fine).
For the method:
To start, pour the vodka, coffee liqueur and espresso into a cocktail shaker. Fill a martini glass with ice to chill and then fill the cocktail shaker with ice as well.
Put the other half of the shaker on top and give it a good tap to lock it in, then shake the living daylights out of it. You want the ice to smash up while chilling the liquid down; its what creates the frothy top.
Try to use fresh-from-the-freezer ice, as melting ice is too watery and will dilute the martini.
The recipe continues:
Once shaken, tap the side of the shaker to break the vacuum seal. Empty the ice out of the Martini glass, then place the strainer on top of the shaker and pour the contents through a sieve directly into the glass. Using the strainer and the sieve helps create a rich, smooth, froth.
Garnish with 3 coffee beans and attempt to contain your delight.
So there you go – if you do attempt to make it, feel free to let me know how good it is in the comments section!
